During my 100 hour inspection the mechanic discovered metal filings in the 'ol Continental O-300. Looks like a new engine is in the offing and I was wondering if anybody has opinions/information on the STC for the Lycoming 180HP conversion for a '48 ragwing.
Thanks,
Mike

To my knowledge no one has an STC for an engine upgrade for the ragwing. There have been some field-approved ("one-time STC") upgrades, such as the O-340 Lyc & the IO-360 Cont, but not on a multiple-use STC. I talked about this with Harry Dellicker of DelAir, who has a Lyc O-360 STC for the A & B models, as well as for the 172/175 series. He told me it had to do with the fuel system, in particular the size & riouting of the fuel lines and the resulting fuel flow (or lack of it).
Before you get too set on the idea of a Lyc 360 conversion, talk to some people who have actually done one. You might be surprised at the money & time involved. But it does make for a heck of an airplane......
