Flying 170's
I had a thought
the other day and got to wondering if there are many others in my same situation. I have been to a bunch of C-170 flyins, 11 C-170 conventions and numerous non C-170 flyins plus just doing a lot of flying over the years (23yrs) and I got to thinking about how many C-170's I have either flown and/or ridden in. Believe it or not only about 5-6 that I can think of. Seems like we would do so more frequently. Maybe at some of these flyins, conventions, etc. we need to just offer others there the opportunity to ride/fly our planes, swap rides, etc. It would be fun to see how each one flys just a little bit different from another one.

Frank That's a great idea. I just want to confirm my long held belief that heaters are the only real improvements Cessna has made since the ragwing was introduced. Seriously I would love to fly an A or B Model some time as I have never done so. Our EAA chapter had an Old Buzzard picnic this summer and our members got a chance to fly with other members in their planes. it was one our most popular events. Maybe we should try the same in the 170 organization. Bill K

I have offered numorious times to give people a chance to fly my airplane mainly because they have questions about how the VG's work.
I can't recall any 170 owners taking me up on the offer. The offer is always on the table 24/7 for ANYBODY.
Just say hey can I try that plane?
You don't have to have a ride to offer in exchange. I've flown all the model 170s though I only have about 20 minutes in a '48. Now if you have a Waco, RVx, multi-engine or some other bird I've never been in we'll be expecting a ride around the patch.

Bruce I too would be happy to give any association member a ride. As for a different ride I hope to be able to offer a J5 ride sometime in the future. Some time when it is convienent I would like to go up with you. I guess I could kill two birds with one stone there with your hybrid. Bill K

Bill if we do it right I can arrange a ride in my Cub, my 170 and a friends 170A with cross wind gear. Oh boy is that gear fun.

Look forward to the oppotunity to share a few rides some time. Maybe we can have a little 170 get togather and picnic in the SE PA area some time. The J5 is progressing at the pace of a steady turtle but it moves forward a little each week. We are about to cover the wings. We also picked up another J5 destroyed in Hurricane Katrina when a hangar collapsed on it. We are hopeing to use the C85 out of it for a powerplant. For the information of others on the forum I am in a partnership with a few members of our EAA Chapter on a J5 Cub project.

I guess I should slap myself for being so unfriendly. I had houseguests during Thanksgiving, including a co-worker who was once a D-18 pilot, so I had every reason to not be concerned about letting him get current in a tailwheel. I really had to bite my tongue and grit my teeth as he abused my airplane, tires, and brakes and kept me wondering if we were going to wreck it. It was all I could do to keep from taking it away from him on virtually every landing.
I later decided the experience had put about 50 landings of wear-and-tear on my airplane, several times put such side-loads on it I was afraid we'd ground-loop, and it has almost made me swear off letting anyone else ever fly it again. I guess I shouldn't have said this, but it really doesn't matter how much time and previous experience someone has,... if you don't know how they fly, you'd best have a serious discussion before the flight that you do not intend to save their feelings if they appear to not be in complete control of things during the flight... you intend to take it away from them and interrupt the playtime.
I hate bounce-drills and what it does to classic airplanes.

George, I don't know about you and others, but if we agree to go flying in your plane, 170 or other, I not only "want" you, but expect you to remain the PIC and anytime you feel I am getting close to "the edge", I want you to take over to prevent an incident. I will asure you when you or someone else is in my plane if I have concerns I will take over whether you are a new student, new pilot or a grizzled ole fart with umteen thousand hours in everything with wings.
Now Bruce, the reason folks haven't been taking you up on flying your plane is they are afraid it will make too short of a landing and bump their noggin on the glare shield
Tell them it is OK to make a 300 foot landing.
