When travelling, I usually try to wear a 170 shirt in case we happen by someone from the Association, but this is the first time I actually got a hit. Karen and I were on our way to catch a flight at DTW yesterday, and had an airline pilot call out to us across two escalators, "Do I see Cessna 170 shirts over there?!" I didn't recognize him, and we were moving in opposite directions so we only had a few seconds to exchange info, but I did get that he is a 170 owner and is from the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. Does anyone have any idea who it might have been?

Apparently someone who was trying to get as far in the opposite direction as possible from you.

Miles, there are a lot of airline pilots in our area (D/FW) and surely some are or have been C-170 owners. The only one that comes to mind immediately is Andy Shane who flies for American. Andy lives at Pecan Plantation (otx1) near Granbury. I'll email him and see if he recalls seeing some crazy guy wearing a C-170 shirt and accompanied by a good looking blonde.
I'll let you know if he gives me a reply. Andy has been a member and had a really nice 170, but he sold it when he had an opportunity to purchase an equally nice C-180. He has a Republic Seabee and some kind of light sport (I think) amphib. I see him at the Pecan Plantation flyin held a couple of times a year. He is a really nice guy.

George,
Don't you ever run out of un-called-for comments?

Re: Close Encounter of the 170 Kind
It was a JOKE, Miles.
I don't know Andy Shane but he's written in the 170 News as far back as 1st Qtr 1995. I'm thinking it might also have been Bruce Shipp who flys for SWA.
It might also be one of two airline types from the Dallas area who've called and left msgs in the last week. They've been to Oshkosh and didn't find their dream 170's and were looking for leads. (I suspect one of those callers, whom I know, might simply be helping his buddy in a search.)

Re: Close Encounter of the 170 Kind
I've had close encounters as you had Miles. Most of the time people will come up to me as start talking about a friend or some place I've been and I wonder how in the world they know I might have been there or know this person. All the time I'm forgetting about the shirt I'm wearing.
Most often it happens when I'm wearing one of my Cub shirts but it's happened with the TIC170 shirts as well. Now those shirts will have to share time with my newly acquired Harley shirts.
Before I buy or even accept a free shirt I have to think, "will I have enough time to wear it and where will I keep it" I brought 4 new t-shirts home from the Branson convention. The Convention shirt, a new style TIC170 shirt, a l.B.Metal Draft of Dexter NM shirt I cleverly out bid everyone for at the auction and a Harley shirt from that evil
Harley rental place that has now cost me lots of money. And to think I wasn't even trying to acquire any new shirts having just brought home two new Cub shirts and two new Quakertown Pilot Association shirts the week before the convention.
I hesitate to wear the L.B Metal Craft shirt around here. I'm just not sure how much new business from PA Larry Benedict can handle in New Mexico.
