Alcoa 50,000-ton forging press

Post by jrenwick »

Wow! http://boingboing.net/2012/02/13/machines.html

According to the article, Every commercial aircraft made by Airbus and Boeing contains parts made by this press or similar ones. It made the jet age possible.

My favorite quote from the second article:
Only when you climb it, peer down from its sixth-floor summit, and realize that the puny machine next to it is, in fact, its 35,000-ton brother—well, then you finally appreciate the size of the thing. It’s big.

I remember on a sales call to Boeing that the 737 interior line has a large press as well, I am thinking 100,000 ton but might be mistaken. Anyway it was a big as those photos in the article.
