I think that Watkins has maybe hit it. I do remember that the Doyn Conversion with the O-340 did not look exactly like the O-360 conversions.

Here are some photos of one recently sold on Barnstormers with an O-340 conversion.

I agree the missing 170 probably had a 0-320 or 0340. Looking at the missing plane the prop is way to short for a 0-360 but the prop look just like the one from Barnestormers and the the exhaust exit also matches.

It was an early conversion so it would be an early prop as evidenced by the spinner and blade clamps. Later conversions (I believe after 1966 xc's were no longer available) would be using a newer style of prop such as a compact so defining which engine is under the hood by the prop may not always be successful. I think the reason you see 0340's with an older prop may be due the lack of a substitution/upgrade being readily available. And I'm no expert here just putting it out there for comment.

I emailed TC Williams and asked him about the plane he just sold, It used to be N2925D so it fits in the range I am looking at, if the third number is not a 4 after all. Its a long shot because I do believe that it is a four.
Also looking at the possibility that it is a 4, but in the fourth position. The nine is practically behind the wing strut, leaving enough room for a one and then a four. Unfortunately, 2914D is in registration limbo at this time, but I may attempt to contact the registrant if we don't figure this out first. Dig out those log book #1's

I'm surprised we haven't heard from Roesbery. Being an administrator I can tell he visited on 25 March and just missed this coversation. I did contact him direct via email but perhaps he'll check that the same day he checks in here at the forum.

Been to the big city for a few days, ( Anchorage ) Give me a chance and I'll look through the records. The paint does not quite match the picture, but the cowling may have been repainted at some point. The plane is now in the home stretch of a complete new paint scheme. Charlie

And you never got the FAA data on CD which shows every owner since the airframe was registered and all form 337s sent to them?

Heck I'll buy it just to take a look and then send it to you if there is a remote possibility that this is the same plane. Looks like I'm going to be paying for up to six of the CD's as it is. 2925D was not it according to TC Williams. Long shot anyhow. My luck it will turn out to be one of the two for which the FAA has no record.

Bruce, didn't the two-speed McCauley prop also use a large spinner similar to that?

Yes George and the length of the prop in the photo and the McCauley 2 speed are about the same but the hub and spinner in the picture is bigger in my opinion than the McCauley and with the exhaust exit matching that of the 0-340 I'd say it is a Lycoming.

John the 3rd digit sure looks like a 4 to me and no other. I'd by Roesbery's CD first.

Well,the CD for N2940D has been purchased, it'll take a couple weeks to get here and then we'll know about this one. In the meantime, I'm going to keep the issue alive by attempting to contact the two owners that are not members and the owners of the two planes that were de-registered/expired.
