Steve Grimsley did an excellent article yrs ago on replacing the old cork float on these manual gauges. I followed his instructions almost to the letter when one of mine sunk and had to be replaced. It has continued work well ever since. That has been at least 20 yrs ago.

A better solution is available these days rather than that method... Use the now-available “Nitriile” floats that sell for less than $4.

Hello,
I've been lurking for a bit but recently signed up/paid for full membership. I have a 1955 C170b. I'm interested in this article mentioned above by Steve Grimsley on how to replace the floats in my fuel gauges. The left gauge works but the Right one shows no meaningful information and although it bounces around a little it rests on empty most of the time. I'm guessing the cork is fuel-logged or gone so I'd like to replace the floats with the synthetic ones form Aircraft spruce.
Searching the members only document area doesn't seem to produce the Grimsley article or any other article re fuel gauge removal and replacement of the floats. I must be missing something.
Thank you,
Dan Miller

Welcome Dan!
George or Bruce may have to turn some magical key to allow you into the vault of past issues of The 170 News. From the home page press the “Members Area” tab then select the “TIC170A Publications” banner. Once in, you’ll find Grimsley’s article on page ten of the
second quarter 2012 edition of The 170 News.
