Didn't know there were so many trim choices!
Guess I should get some in white, since the plane's going to be white?
25 ft of 3/8 U trim should do it?

Doug, I was noticing that your Before pic of your plane, looks like my After, scetch paint scheme.

Coming up with a paint scheme is tough.
Sitting around waiting for 3 weeks, while it's being painted the scheme that you tried to describe, is tougher.

ss screws

Post by philnino »

I know those stainless screws are pretty and I have them all over mine, but I think I might go back to cadmium plated ones after burning through several drill bits and battery charges on the DeWalt to remove a frozen one.

Stainless PK screws never seem to be a problem, but machine screws will easily gall and sieze in a steel plate nut if you try to run them in or out too fast with battery drill or equal.

Best use of the clutch type is as a mini impact driver for removal of the stubborn machine screws.

"Stainless"....ain't really. So-called stainless steel is actually a high-cromium content steel...which is slower to rust than plain steels. But they will still slowly corrode.
And if they are screwed into another type fastener...like plain steel... or aluminum...etc....then that other fastener will corrode even faster than it does normally due to electrolysis of dissimilar materials.
So,...screw a SS machine screw into a plain steel riv-nut and wash the plane or let it sit out in the rain a few days and you'll likely end up with a SS screw that doesn't remove as easily as you might have expected. Using an electric screwdriver may strip out the head of the screw and now it's really stuck!
For that reason, SS fasteners aren't always the best for structural fasterners like machine screws/bolts/etc. Sometimes it's best to stick with the originally specified fastener. (And if you do use a SS or Inconel fastener in a structural application, then make certain it is a bona fide structural fastener, (not just one out of the cheap stainless steel cowling/fairing kits) and so marked.)

Traci sent me pictures of the plane!
She really likes it, I'm disappointed!
I don't know if it just shock from such a change or the fact that the striping isn't exactly like I wanted. I'll wait till I see it in person.

Dave, can you post a (small) pic here, so we can share in your wife's delight (or your disappointment)?

I'm going to talk to the painter about re-painting the stripes!
I keep opening the pictures, hoping it will change a little.
And it is getting a little better.
If ever I have a plane painted again, I will be there to help lay out the stripes.
Bruce if I sent you a pic, could you post one for very temporary?

My Spirits have just been lifted! I just got a personal email from Mr John D and Dorothy Benham. How many of you can say that? Got to send him a map to Petit Jean! :)

Same colors as my "181" was. Just awesome 8) You'll find that you'll get a lot of great compliments on it.
