Hey Vic your a little farther north than me and I'm not sure my NO SNOW bubble will reach that far. Better to buy some skis for the 170 than a snow blower motor.

I flew mine on skis when the previous owner had it, and it was a blast. Had them on in 2000 for almost a week.

John did you buy the skis from Wes with the plane or did he just have access to them?

Wes had two pair of 1500's and told me I should have 2000's or more. I have been watching for penetration's of 2500 or 3000 according to some of the listings on the ski manufacturers sites.
Am I thinking properly for more float capacity on the snow? I'm not sure which would handle best.

Federal A-2500 or A-3500 are among a few on the type certificate.

I don't think 1500s would be approved for the 170 but that doesn't surprise me that Wes would be flying with them anyway.

I've just put 1500s on my J3, widened to eight inches with plastic bottoms. (Haven't tried them out yet.) A couple of other guys here who fly J3s on skis have figured out that the stock 1500s are too narrow -- they've had difficulty getting off the ground sometimes with up to 85hp engines and cruise props.

I have Flylite 3000 skis for my 170. They came off a 180, so presumably they're plenty for the 2200lb gross weight. I haven't installed these yet; I intend to get some ski experience with the J3 first.

What am I missing here. This of course is for my Cub but I'd think a 170 would be similiar. The Hub of the ski has a 1.5" opening. My axle is 1.25". Is there just a sleeve spacer that goes in there which is what 43.13 seems to indicate. If a sleeve while I can probably make one are they available.

Call Atlee Dodge (I guess Univair now) or Airglass (Landes Skis). This is a relatively common problem for cub owners and these guys make or know where to get these bushings.

Bruce Seems like you can get more info on skis here than you can on the Cub site!!! If you run into too many problems give me a call. My buddies and I who own a J5 togather just bought a set of skis from a fellow on our airport who was using them on a J3 . We might be able to loan you what you need or at the least we can show you what he did. He had a special set up like the helicopter guys have to wheel it around on the hard top. Bill k

There is no doubt this is one of the best forums around. So you have a J5 thats cool. If I was looking for another J3 type I'd love to find a J5.

What skis did the fellow have on the J3? And why wouldn't you need the axle adapters from the J3 for the J5? I'd think it would have the same axle size.

Bruce We will eventually need the same parts but our J5 was a basket case that four guys from our EAA chapter bought a few years ago. We have been slowly restoring it. We have all the control surfaces covered and most are done. We are just starting to trammel the second wing so with a little luck we can cover the wings soon. We still need an engine but there is still time to get that. Some time you have nothing to do stop down and I will show you what we are doing. All other members are welcome any time too.

That won't be neccessary George, my eggbeaters already have skis (skids) down and welded as we use to tell the navy controllers.

As a followup. I was able to find bronze bushings that fit right in to the ski pedistal and on to the axle. I'm fabricating the rigging attachment brackets today so when the new bungee material arrives I should be all set.

And the best thing about all this George is it is all approved per 43.13.

So Bruce have you been able to put this snow to good use? All of us here want to hear about it if you have as long as its aviation related and good. Bill K

Just wanted to let you know Bruce. I think your snow bubble slid down here to southern Arizona. We haven't had any snow for a long time
