Yup, its similar to what is shown in the photograph. I will check the integrity of any baffeling in this installation but if this is standard, the problem may lie elsewhere.

That's definitely the standard installation. As George said, get yourself an Illustrated Parts Catalog or at least download one for free at:
http://www.micro-tools.com/pdf/cessna/

For the straight 170, figure 34, page 62 of the manual (page 72 of the .pdf file) shows the baffle assembly.
