Before I discovered Petit I used to buy my oil at American Avionics at BFI. Even when I bought there,the Phillips 20-50 wasn't much more money than W100. I've never priced Aeroshell 15-50 at Petit,but it's probably way more.
I usually end up buying stuff at American instead of National if they carry it, Don at National seems to consistantly charge more for the same thing. Case in point,I just bought some oil filters at American,I paid like $13.25 each. Don (and about everybody else around)wanted about a buck and a half more. Since I bought 5,it was worth the trouble. Plus,I needed someplace to fly that day!
I've had people tell me they didn't want to spend the extra gas money to fly to Boeing to buy stuff,then turn around and burn an hour or two of fuel just boring holes in the sky. Boeing isn't far for you--plus it'll keep ya sharp on dealing with tower controllers!

Thought I posted this question before, but don't see it anywhere. Anyway, the SRAM detailes some members who have had good luck using Slick 50 in their engines. These articles are rather old, and I am wondering if anyone has any recent experience in using Slick 50 in the O-300? Anyone use STP Oil Treatment....I saw this mentioned in the SRAM as well. Lastly....the use of some MMO in the oil just prior to draining for oil change. Add a bottle of MMO, run the engine for 5 min at idle, and then drain. Thoughts or comments on any of the above?

Bela,I just remembered that Petit doesn't always stock aircraft oil at their PT location,sometimes they have to send it over from PA. If ya decide to buy it from them,better call first to ake sure they have it on hand.

The last time I bought aircraft oil it was at the "Sams Club" store in Roseville, CA. (That's a branch of the Walmart empire) One of my friends told me about it. I paid $16.04, plus calif.sales taxes of
7 1/2%,per 24 qt. case and bought ten cases. I told a guy that works for Walmart about it and he suggested I talk to the local Sams Club management about carrying or getting it. I think they might be interestsd if you could get enough guys together to buy a given quantity of it. It would be pretty difficult to beat that price.

What are the thoughts on the Exxon Elite? I'm on the NE seacoast, lack of flying days & salt air. Exxon pushes it for corrosion prevention. Anyone using this? What kind of oil burn are you getting? I've been using Phillips XC up to now. :?:

I recently switched to Aeroshell W100 "Plus" which contains some corrosion-inhibiting chemicals. It is considerably more expensive than plain old 100W.
Is it worth the additional cost ? Anyone have experience with this ?

The AeroShell Plus oils have additives that leach out copper from your engine's bearings. Shell first denied it, but then reduced the amount of additives in order to counter the proof. I believe the "Plus" oil is not an improvement over frequent flying and frequent oil changes, but may carry some risk of bearing material loss.
The Exxon Elite oil has suffered a recent set-back in that they've discovered ground metal particles in new cases of oil due to manufacturing defects. (Reminiscent of AeroShell's contamination last year, ...the main difference being that Shell's problem was non-metallic debris.) The Elite oil has the same bearing leaching problem the Plus oil has.
I've decided that the anti-corrosion claims of the new additive Plus and Elite oils are countered by the leaching problem, and that in order to avoid the leaching problem one must perform frequent oil changes anyway. So where's the advantage?
I'm sticking with the old tried-and-true AeroShell 100W, except in winter (Dec-Feb in Texas) when I use 80W. I'd consider 15W50 or Phillips Multigrade in the winter if I lived up Nawth and didn't have pre-heat or heated hangar.

Ay-yuh 15W50 it was lot's of us run up heah in the Nawtheast. Get's a might cold heah in the wintah. Even too much snow on the ramp to pahk the cah near the plane. End up wahkin' all the way from the pahkin' lot at t'other end of the field.
