Hey! I know a GREAT WAY to get me to commit!
YOU should HOST a convention!
(Seriously, I hope your kind, generous offer doesn't have an expiration date! I wanna get there just as soon as I can!)

50th Anniversary of Flight Model. Winner-Best Original 170B, 100th Anniversary of Flight Convention. An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons.
One of my friends is ferrying a 170 to Alaska from Michigan in a couple of weeks and I told him to look at this site for some of Richards comments to the Galveston convention and any "Alaska" comments for some help north. I told him this is my dream some day.

John-
Have your friend contact me if he has any other questions or would like to discuss the trip. I just ferried a Super Cub from the Edmonton area to Anchorage a couple of weeks ago so I have some current info on that portion of the trip.

Yes, that is the 7-25 transient parking. Click on the link below, the transient ramp is at the end of the DC-6 video. It's huge, there are permanent tie-downs, and it's paved. They sized it before Sept. 11 for the crowds that used to fly down to fish for red salmon at the Newhalen River. Since 9/11/2001, the lot has never been full again and the limit was reduced from 5 to 3 reds. With the price of gas it's usually only my plane and 2 or 3 others that are permanently tied-down on the back row.

Iliamna has really changed over the last ten years. Both runways were extended and paved along with the ramp areas and the transient parking. There was a million dollar fence installed around the whole airport (to keep the terrorists out I guess). New hangars have gone up and Iliamna Air Taxi bought two PC-12s that are used in a part 121 airline.
One thing that hasn't changed is there is still a Fed operated FSS where pilots can walk in and get a real breifing with a real person while you snack on fresh cookies or brownies made by the FSS specialists and sip on a cup of coffee while you visit. Just like the good old days.
Oh, another thing, the C-46s and DC-6s still fly in on a regular schedule. Click on the links below;

Are you there now? I see you are posting so you must have internet access there. If so, you can track my progress on SPOT Wednesday and know when to expect a knock on your door.

I'm in town now, planning on going out to Iliamna tomorrow if my plane is ready. I had a mag failure coming back the other day and the shop should be finished with it today.

The plane's finished but we won't be going to Iliamna this week. I'm going to Chinitna Bay instead to help move a cabin that is in danger of falling over the bluff on the beach. The beach eroded so much last winter the cabin is only 15 feet from the edge now. If it isn't skidded back it will probably be gone next year.

I didn't get your message in time, so we walked to your cabin and a neighbor informed us you were out of town until maybe Sunday. We continued to Nushagak and fishing was pretty slow. I caught one each of the two days there, but that was it. Here are some pictures:

Sorry we didn't cross paths this time but I'll have the cabin for a long time so you're welcome to come back down, the reds are just showing up. I'll be back around july 8 or 9 for some Newhalen fishing.
The cabin move at Chinitna Bay got rained out and I'm waiting on a call to go back down there so who knows where I'll be for the next week.
