Ron I forgot all about that STC from Mr Johnson.
To be clear what Ron is saying. A Mr. Johnson holds and STC which allows the use of an 0-300-D accessory case on an O-300-A. We have a letter granting permission for association members to use the STC without charge. Continentals SB allows this as well but the STC is undeniable approval for the feds. This Mr. johnson STC has nothing to do with the Associations own engine STC but could be used in conjunction with it.
Your engine continues to use the 8 bolt crank and prop and is still considered an 0-300-A so no further approval is needed to use it on the 170 airframe. You would still need a 5 hole sump if yours is not. This is probably the cheapest way to get a vacuum pump but it might still be expensive as I'd think you might pay as much as $500 or more for the accessory case and starter and a sump if needed is even more. Then the rewire and parts needed for that.
Let me mention just to keep this post in line with what has become the topic of this thread, that none of the parts needed for this conversion were developed by Studebaker.

If you were to try putting a "D" ccessory case on a earlier engine and use the angle drive starter, you would also have to split the main case to replace the starter pinion shaft, which is held between the two case halves and is used with the pull starter, with the bushing that is required with the angle drive starter. I would also expect there might also be some difference in the gearing in the accessory case. I've never heard whether or not a "D" accssory case will bolt up to an earlier series engine case.

I've seen this in an aircraft and thought at the time it was a stealth mod but nice to know it can be done with proper paperwork.

Bl, no one answered your question--Yesterday I went in the attic and looked at a C and D engine case. I think you could pull the starter shaft out and replace it with the D type bushing without splitting the case. You would have to remove both gears and then the bracket (For lack of a better term) holding the shaft in place and then pull the pinion shaft out--may take some pulling-- to remove it and then put the D bushing in (that may take some driving with a wood dowel or something of that sort) and the replace the bracket . You would have to mark the gears to keep timing correct on removal and replacement. I would mark the bolts and teeth. If not it may not be a fun day trying to retime the engine.

The gears have to be removed as the pinion is lower than the top of the cam gear. Hope this helps. Ron

Ron,
I've never tried to either remove or install a starter pinion shaft or a bushing without the case halves being separated. I have been led to believe separation was required for either operation. I have heard that the installation of a B&C light weight starter requires that the pinion shaft be ground off, with a die grinder or such, to accept that accessory. That seems to me to be a rather drastic operation if removal otherwise was possible.

BL, the piece that goes in the case halfs is cup shaped with a flange that is held in place by the little bracket. the flange keeps it from going in the engine and the bracket keeps it from coming out and hitting the cam gear. So, thinking they feel it can move with the bracket I see no reason it can not be pulled out. Ron

Miles, I go look inside my C case again but if that's the case I missed it completely. I'll look inside the hole, maybe they changed it in later cases????? AND IF THAT IS THE CASE YOU CAN NOT PULL IT OUT!!!!! I don't remember seeing a hole in the pinion deal either.

Darn you are fast Miles.
To see the Cont. parts manual pertinant page click on the image below. The pinions for both the C125-2 through O-300-C and the O-300-D are depicted.

Correction, Miles. You cant' remove a starter pinion shaft without splitting, or damaging the case.
