There may be no requirement for state registration in California, but they know you're here by using the federal database, as well as requiring airport managers to send them a list of based aircraft each year. The state annually sends me a property appraisal form to be filled out and sent back in. Fortunately, under a "Historical Aircraft Exemption", privately owned aircraft over 35 years old are exempt from property tax if they are publicly displayed 12 or more days per year. There are hundreds of "Aircraft Display Days" at airports across the state, so it's not hard to comply.
