Thanks everyone for the great response. My apologies for not replying sooner. I had Saturday off and spent the day with my three year old son - first refuelling and cleaning HVS then after lunch flew to a town 175nm south to pick up some new skins. I guy I know there rebuilds 185's and has a press for forming the ridges for the control surface skins. He made me a length to replace the lower rudder skins and repair the flaps. Not bad for $80. Of course the cost of flying down to pick them up doesn't count Spending all afternoon flying with my son was worth every penny ( I know i'm a tragic case - I finally get a day off from flying for work so I spend it flying for fun!)

Back to the topic...

I will try this week to digitise these logos. I still would like an indication of scale if possible - I can easily resize them to suit my layout and if they are not exactly right it doesn't really matter as long as it looks good. However, because I am going to post the finished logos here for anyone to use, I would like to think they are as accurate as possible so that those more particular than me can use them knowing they are right. Also it may be more difficult for people without access to the appropriate software to size them to suit there needs.

Thank you to everyone who posted pictures of the various logos. I have now digitised the logos and they are attached here as pdf files. Any printer should be able to open these files, manipulate the vector art as required and cut a vinyl sticker or paint mask.

*PLEASE NOTE*
1. The dimensions will not necessarily be correct and can be scaled up to suit your needs. When I do this on my plane I will repost these files at the scale I used.
2. The font for 'cessna' is not an exact match of the original photos. It is the closest I could find. I think you would only notice the differences if you compared the two side by side. If anyone can tell me what the proper font is, I will try to get it and redo the logo.

Did you trace the outline of the blueprint or did you get an outline of a font that was close? From your comments you got the outline form a close font. If you used a close font then i's not the same. I'm only pointing this out for the purists among us. Looks pretty good though.

Also saving as a PDF does not capture the vectors for anyone else to use. In essence one would have to trace your outlines to create them again. Might as well trace the blue print if our going to that trouble. Could you post your vectors in a file others might use like an Illustrator file (.AI) or perhaps a cad type universal format.

Here are the measurements for the 170 image as measured from Paul Wood's '53. The 170 and the Cessna and bird are all one drawing and are said to have been drawn to scale meaning if you correct to scale the 170 you will be able to scale the Cessna and bird.

The vector art is published as curves in PDF. This means it is still a vector image. Not sure about AI (I use Corel x4), if I open a new file in corel then import the pdf it retains its vector qualities. As for the font, yes it is an outline of a similar font - not a trace of the logo image and therefore not exactly right. I found it hard to do a good quality and accurate trace due to the pixelation of the low resolution image. If anyone can email me a high res close up of the 'cessna' I will attempt to do a trace to get a more accurate reproduction. I will resize the '170' and repost the correct size. With the 'cessna and bird' logo, if you import the pdf, group all objects, lock the aspect you can risize the logo to any size you want and retain its scale. Bruce try importing the pdf and see if it will work with your AI. If it doesn't I can post a .eps format and I think corel will let me save as .AI - I will post these too.

Noel, your right. the PDF did retain the vectors. Cool. PDFs (and computer graphics) have come so far since I started in 1986 with Pagemaker and PhotoShop with no version numbers after them.

I remember attending a big press conference in Philly in the early 90's for Adobe. They had something they wanted to introduce to the graphics world they called a Page Description File format (PDF). They said it would become all the rage.
