You will definitely want the heavier, rubber abrasion strips/boots. I don't recommend using black tape, even heavy duty tape as rocks will still ding the metal leading edges. I don't remember exactly where I purchased the ones for my 172, but they are the Cessna type that are thicker on the leading edges and taper to thinner material toward the back side or trailing edge of the boot. Someone on this forum will likely be able to guide you to one or more sources.

Cessnaparts.com/ Hill A/C shows a list price for P/N 1232040-5 abrasion boots. Tell "Ron" I sent you and you'd like our 170 Assoc'n discount. These are the cessna flat boot approx. 1/16 thick by 6" wide.
