Dave, I was thinking of you the other day. I was out at the airport (Monterey) and meet a guy who owns 3 large hangers there. In one he has 4 tanks (one of them Russian) 3 half-tracks and 3 jeeps of various configurations. In the second hanger he has what looks like a toy store for military buffs, guns, signs, uniforms -- you name it. In the third hanger he has a PT-22 and a beautifully restored L4. I asked if I could come back and take some pictures, so I'll post them when I meet up with him again.

You were also in my thoughts last week while I attended Sentimental Journey at Lock Haven.

There is a pristine yet regularly flown L-4 owned by a gentleman from western PA. His son describes his dad as an L-4 expert and it only stands to reason as they have been taking care of theirs for more than 20 years as well as restoring several others. His son new a heck of a lot about them as well.

Any way they are currently trying to restore a Jeep of the era to go with their L-4. That's where you fit in. You guy's need to get together.

I have a picture I'll get later and will try to come up with his name and contact info.

just an update:
i haven't been doing much on the L4 lately.
just a lot of reasearch etc.
i am waiting for the faa.gov
records of my L4 on CD-ROM.
also, am waiting for it's military history card
from the kansas military aircraft museum.
then, i'm going to decide if i want to
repair my demolished fuselage
(there is about 25-40% that i can use)
or buy a new certified one from Univair.
first, tho, i want to watch and see how
a OA welding work shop goes at oshkosh.
and also take as many pics as i can of
any L4's that are up there!!
then the ball will start rolling!
not much building yet.
its a lot different restoring a
type certified airplane.
the 13th i fly to germany
to help HOBO
(a german friend who lives in hamburg)
drive his wwii jeep up
to denmark, and then ferry across to england
for the big beltring military vehicle show.
i hear wake up call is via howiters at 0600!!

in a 1944 GPW WWII jeep,
made it from hamburg, germany to esberg, denmark
then across the north sea on a ferry to harwich, england,
then down to SE Kent for the War and Peace
military show.....awesome!!!!
nothing comes close to it here in america.
it is the military equivlent of oshkosh.
there were over 400 wwII jeeps alone.
thousands of other vehicles of every
kind imaginable.
leave for oshkosh tomorrow at dawn.

there were 3 L4's at oshkosh.
one was up for the people's choice award.
it was in perfect condition.
i took about 250 pics of it!!!!

Dave you must plan to attend Sentimental Journey at Lock Haven next year. You will not be disappointed. The dates have not been announced but most likely will be June 18-21, 08

brought my new univair fuselage home!
it fit into the back of my pickup w/o problem.
had to wash a few bug off the top tho
just might get started on it now.

Make sure the little nubs of tubing are added to the airframe in the window location. These tubes where used as the leveling point and required by the military. An L-4 with out them well .... is just not an L-4.

not to worry
the sst that converts the J3 fuselage to an L4
will include that.
