Re: What did you buy for your 170 today?
Installed a GNC-355 and two GI-275s to make it IFR legal. I just didn’t trust the AN Venturi Gyros, or rather my ability to accurately fly them. This probably borders on the insane to put this much money in an old taildragger but I plan to keep it a long time, so...

I have seen this before lots of money spent on and old taildragger with the intent of keeping it a long time.................... and I would do it again, flying it helps with my sanity.IA DPE wrote:........... None of what I spend on my airplane makes any sense.
I would do it again in a heartbeat, probably more and sooner.

The old tailwheel was showing some signs of age from sitting for 3 years so ordered a new tailwheel/tube and put it on. While I was at it, the previous owner had put Maule compression springs so replaced those with the piper tension springs and new chains before it became an expensive mistake.

A brand-new set of back windows (plus installation). The old windows were, in my estimation, original and in pretty bad shape.

Brian, I have not seen that type of forward tailwheel steering spring mounting point, interesting idea.

Update on CIES fuel senders for my 1952 170B.
"Bought a set of CIES fuel senders. They used longer arm than original so could reach through 4 inch extension tube to replace the mechanical gauge."
However, when installed the longer arm hit a baffle in both right and left tanks. CIES is now working on another modification to duplicate the dimensions of the mechanical gauge.
If it works, will let you know.

I’ve seen a number installed like that…. It may reduce the amount of weeds/grass picked up on turf or unimproved runways. (of course it’s not like the illustrations in the flawless IPC.johneeb wrote:Brian, I have not seen that type of forward tailwheel steering spring mounting point, interesting idea.

Gary that setup with the eye bolt at the rudder cable connections is what I have on my airplane, what I notice in Kelly's photo is what appears to be the rudder cable link fashioned so that it has an extension on its bottom that the steering spring is attached to. Sorry the cropping of Kelly's photo is not very clear.

My tongue-n-cheek previous comment was possibly misunderstood:
Here’s the pg to which I was sarcastically referring:
The later model:
Except for not using the AN42-6 eyebolts, and the use of clevis’s on the chains mine is installed per the Scott dwg. and I’ve had zero problems.

Good eyes John. I hadn't noticed the "L" bracket/rudder cable link.
