Jim, I do not know why either, I followed the drawings that came with the XP-mods STC.

For sure you follow the STC paperwork, but why in the development stage would they decide to go a different path than Cessna.

Isn't it true that some IO-360 installations have been done without a header tank? Someone told me that they just ran the fuel return line up the door post and into the left fuel tank. If that is true, one would have to burn fuel out of that tank first to prevent fuel overflow if the fuel tank were filled to capacity. Didn't sound like a good arrangement to me, but I don't know much about injected engines and their fuel systems. I have no idea how much fuel can be returned to a header tank, but it seems the fuel flow to the injection system must be a constant volume and if full engine power is used on take off & climb then very little would return, but with engine power reduced as in cruise or while idling that there would be quite a bit. On the TSIO-520 in my friends' C-206, he has two header tanks under the floorboard, one on the pilot side and one on the copilot side. This must be due to the 206 not having a "BOTH" selection on the fuel selector valve?

Acorn Welding (
http://www.acornwelding.com/productsEngineMount.htm ) quoted me a 3650.00 price for a new engine mount. IO-360-C to a C-170

That's the same price they gave me when I called them. It's based on the price to make the HawkXP mount.
Keep in mind, they can't give you any approval for that mount as they have no approved design drawings for it. You'd still need that from XPMods or other means of approval.

When I did mine Tom told me I could use ether style header tank but I wasn't too eager to pull my floor up so I went with the Maule style just for ease of installation.

The IO-360 installations I've seen without a header tank run the fuel return up the door post and into the cross cabin vent line. There is no way to determine where the return fuel will go, either to the left or right wing tanks or to both, or maybe out of the goose neck. That's why I wouldn't consider an installation without a header tank so that the fuel returns to the header tank and then right back to the engine driven pump.
The probable reason that Tom Anderson used the Maule header tank was price. I paid only $90 for a new one from Maule. There is NOTHING sold by Cessna that cheap. They want something like $300 for a firewall shut off valve. Maule used a Ford truck valve costing about 1/10th as much.
If anyone needs a brand new Maule header tank, I have one I'd be delighted to sell.

Maule now wants $180 for their header tank.

When I ordered the header tank from Maule, Bruce, the parts man, said they didn't have one in stock but they would make one and send it. If the price has gone up that much, maybe I'll make a buck on it. The reason I didn't use it was because I found one in a junk yard that included the FWSOV for something like forty bucks.

for comparison, engine mount for a Falco from Sequoia Aircraft costs $3500. No certification. Also, a dozen years ago or so XP Mods was selling the STC and engine mount for $5K. (Tried to look up a price for Vans Engine mounts, not quoted separately on the website )

Also by comparison, a NEW engine mount for a Maule M5 220C (TCM IO-360) costs $980.00.
Might be easier to buy that and have the modification approved. There is a 337 on this site that did that.

There are a few rear engine mounts from 337's around for sale, even one from Acorn Welding. Usually go for about $1500.

Keep in mind, that when you buy the STC from Tom Anderson, you get the drawing for the mount,,,, you can have any one build that for you. Tom Anderson will actually give you a list of those who can do it.
