What the Piper PA-23 Apache is, in reality, is the lowest common denominator in the motored airplane zoo. It's the cheapest, the easiest, the most obtainable, the ugliest, the most docile and, according to some, possibly the least useful. The single engine ceiling is 50+ feet under ground (after a while and more if the terrain is above 1000' MSL)

OLE GAR SEZ - 4 Boats, 4 Planes, 4 houses. I've got to quit collecting!
That narrow gauge railraod trip was the best vacation I ever had. Amazing scenery. imagining the work involved to make it happen way back when, and the smiles on my kids (mine) faces are something I'll never forget. We stayed in the old Avon Motel in Silverton, no phones or restrooms in rooms, just a public restroom/showers and one phone downstairs. That was in 1993, all streets were dirt/gravel except the main street. Good bars and eatin joints. Lots of hiking/backpacking experiences. I miss it.

Dave, this is what Durago to Silverton RR looks like in January, Spectacular, it is very near the top of my list of neat things to do! I hope someday to ride the train again in Summer time.

Learned to bleed the Flaps pretty quick after take off at Animas Durango. Plane has been performing well.
Noted at 2500 rpm, 60 OAT, 8000 ft, climbed 500 fpm, 70-80 mph. Slowed down after that, but climbed to 12,500 fairly easy.
That is just after take off from Animas, Full Tanks, 520 body weight, 100 lbs luggage, heading to Glennwood Springs.
Landed at Glennwood Spring - 10 mins after landing, here comes a 52' 170. Quickly looked them up by tail number, in the 170 book, as I walked to their hanger. Very nice folks! So they took us to the car rental and lined us out. Aviation folks are just great!
So we rafted the Colorado River - Drove to Aspen, Independence Pass, Leadville, Vail, etc.
Yes that's right - I layed there debating with myself, at 4:00 one morning, on weather I should leave my two children and fly 150 miles RT just to say I flew to Leadville. Decided that was not the greatest ideal, so the next morning we climbed up to Hanging Lake and did the drive to Leadville. One of the best days we had and I'm so glad we made that scenic mtn drive. I had to stop at Leadville of course - anyone could fly off that runway - it reminds me of Homer, Alaska. Forever! I was expecting a mountain town with an airport hanging off the edge off a cliff.
If you ever take this trip - order maps before leaving home!
Also call ahead to make sure the next airstip has 100LL or land at bigger airports I reckon.
And count on windy crosswinds! Been a good tune up!
Recently changed my landing-in-wind technique - I've learned not to print that kind of stuff though!

We just enjoyed your fabulous photos, Dave! Thanks so much for posting them! I'm thinking I need to take my Colorado grandchildren for a ride on that train!!!!
Elaine and I are in Edmonton this morning, hoping to get to Fort Nelson or Watson Lake this evening. It's been a great trip across the prairies so far. Track us here: http://tinyurl.com/46cnap.Gotta go!

Yes our plane is stock engine with 8043 prop.
If you ever ride the Silverton Train - MAKE SURE - you get an enclosed car!
Tid Bit - GAR grew up, some, next to the Silverton Train Track in Hermosa, on a Ranch his dad worked. He would hitch a ride on the train to Durango to buy groceries & such.
We started running out of money - hotel prices get extremely high the closer we got to Aspen area. So we bought us a Walmart Tent and 3 sleeping bags (that was to make sure the plane was totally stuffed.) The picture is just under the wing at Glennwood Airport (on the gravel).
So off from Glennwood we go - of course we had to stop in Rifle 30 mins away to get map. Very nice pilot friendly airport!
Flew for 4 hrs and landed in a wind storm at Soda Springs to get gas. No Gas! Gas truck just hadn't been there in a few days.
No choice but to run 6 gals of Chevron through it and fly the 75 miles to Driggs, ID. On the way to Driggs, we kept going up the wrong canyons - Got tight in one canyon - Got REAL tight - needed ever bit of that 8043 pitch and was just praying I didn't get a down draft. But we climbed out and the kids just think it was another adventure with dad.
Landed in the wind at Driggs, ID. Called Bob (170 member I found in membership book) and here he came. Picked us up and took us home - did I say how great Aviation Folks (170 members are)? Bob and his wife live on 10 acres with a mountain view. They lined us out on where to go and what to do in Yellowstone. Had a wonderful breakfast, showered, and were off to Yellowstone.
Yellowstone - I'm stunned! I can't believe how gorgeous it is and how much there is here.
