Hind site is always twenty twenty and of course I wish I'd rented a hanger for the night. And of course the next pipes I set will be different from these. But I do not feel bad or that I had used an inadequate system with the knowledge I had to this point. I feel that few here would have turned down the tiedowns as being inadequate either.

It was not my intent to say you are inadequate,if you took it that way I apologize.The key words were "it may make us look that way" I would have use those tie downs also and felt ok with it, the out come sometimes makes us look that way no matter how hard we try. Like I said I'm glad you shared with us so we can all learn from this unfortunate situation. Again my apology if I have offended you.

Don't get on the forums much, so had not heard about your problems until today. I mirror what everyone else has conveyed. Hope everything works out in the end, airplane and physical. Congrats on the grandfather thing. Hope to see y'all in MI.

It strikes me that I have the answer to all your problems. Why didn't I think of it before?
What you really need is the project airplane I have for sale. My project has no engine. You have one. You have a dinged up fuselage. mine is good, and even has a baggage door. You have a serviceable landing gear. I will pull off the C-180 legs and knock off two grand from the price of $7500. Between what you have and my project, you could have one classy machine! With a little extra effort you might even be able to work your way up out of the "Rat" class.

So BL this might be the appropriate time for you to list this project plane in the trade mart. I looked and didn't see it. At the very least PM me with a bit more detail. What year is it? What would be missing or if it is easier what does the fuselage come with?I Won't rule it out but I wasn't looking for a project and shipping it all to PA might be prohibitive.

And those tires are waiting in my garage for what ever airworthy 170 I end up with.

Bruce, many times I've seen truckers and those pulling trailers across the country have an empty one-way they'll advertise for inexpensive hauling. Craig's list and such is one place. Of course insurance for the load might be an issue, but so would a private haul.

Find a trailer for sale in Calif. and sell it when you get it home.

Since you have a letter of approval, I also know where you can get some wings with long-range tanks already installed.

Forget my PM to you, do what BL has to say. If you do it with out painting, or any other fix-ups, You will have the best "rat" plane in the fleet.......Brad

Oh Brad it is easier said than done. I have an IFR certified and approved GPS install that would have to be moved and re-approved. If I need to use my wingtip strobes the same applies as they were done on a 337. Then there is my VGs STC'd specifically to my current plane.

It is an interesting idea and I'm not discounting it. Actually there is a '53 disassembled cleaned and repainted waiting to be reassembled right at my own airport. It's been suggested I could by it with my insurance money. We think it only has 2500 total time.

Believe me if I were to go with BL's project or another like it there would be no painting. One of the problems with the project at my own airport is it has been freshly painted and the paint isn't that nicely done.

I had my special issuance medical lapse this year. It expired on October 31st 09. I had all of my paper work and exam reports along with my graduated EKG test sent in by the end of August. I am an insulin dependant Diabetic. This is the first time it has lapsed in about the last 3 years. The FAA has in the past three years been doing a real good job getting it returned to me. I just got it back the week end before last December 1st.

My medical is tied to my employment as a flight analyst for Boeing Military Integrated Defense Systems. So it has been a stressful month and a week. As if I did not get my medical back it could jeopardize my job. I can only say I got it back. I have no idea why they are so slow this year. I did call the local FAA medical rep with my PI number and they were able to tell me by looking on their link to the FAA medical in Oklahoma that it was in the hands of the Doctor in Oak City. Yea I can legally fly again. But I feel your pain.
