That pitot should have a static port on the side of the tube, to the best of my recollection. I was going to put that system in a Lancair, but left Horizon before I finished the airplane.

I will ask a friend of mine that was on the Spektrum development team if that can somehow be extended or a new tube made.I would think that a soldering iron, some small drill bits, and some brass or aluminum tubing could make a pretty accurate one in no time.

Did you ever get a spinner worked out?

Try the Bullet/Extra style from Pete Model. There is a little more point to the very tip, but I think it will be close for you. Carbon fiber with aluminum backplate, and perimeter mount screws. Carbon spinners are the norm nowadays.

Bad idea? No. Noticeably effective? Depends.

I've flown models smaller and larger than your 170 with and without VGs during testing and in many cases, there is a difference. For what you're doing, maybe not, but in many aerobatic models I've flown, they do seem to help the airplane track a little straighter, and keep airflow over the ailerons a little better at higher angles of attacks. Models simply aren't that "exact"...they're not supercritical wings, they have loads of power, and relatively light wing loadings comparatively to their full-scale counterparts. During testing of the ParkZone VisionAire at Horizon, I was with Quique when he had the idea to test and he actually used twigs taped to the tops of the wings to replicate the airflow. Certainly molded VGs performed a little better, but not much.

Stick them at the center of pressure and have at it.

That project is really looking good! The VG's would do the same thing for the 27% that they do for full scale high wing planes------cut your hands when washing/waxing the wings
