I drew # 354, dropped out of college (temporarily so I would become 1-A in order to keep that number), told women I was a doctor, and blew my inheritance on flying lessons.

I drew #362 at the end of my senior year in High school and served my year of eligibility as 1-A also. I asked the guy at the draft board what were my chances of being drafted. He said, "Don't worry about it unless we have global thermo-nuclear war, in which case you won't need to worry anyway".

I drew #9 and when I went 1-A I think I lasted about a month before I got a Greetings for Uncle Sam. Did 4 years in USAF. Most of it at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS.

I missed the draft by 28 days (and have been thanking God and Mr. Nixon ever since)! I actualy thought it was an April Fools joke (April 1 1974) when they dropped the draft. I've never had a card, yet my younger brother had to sign when Mr Carter reinstated the draft. They didn't want us old farts by then.

I drew #149 I was told that they only expected to take up to #100 so I had a cusion. I never got called. My brother got a low number went to the Airforce and put his name on a list. lots of people trying to go anywhere but the army. The airforce called not long after and he had to decide what to do right then. My mom told him he should go in the airforce and not take any chances. So he did. The next day his draft notice for the army showed up at the house. He spent his tour at Travis AFB working on C141 aircraft.

thanks for the interesting stories guys!
as i said,
i was # 119,
but they only took up to about
# 96 in jasper county, iowa
so as it turned out,
i would have needed to go.
but...since i deferred out for college
it made me ellegible longer
and when i went to med school
i was even more so.
i guess now i'm too old ~55.
but who knows for sure 8O
thanks again

Bill,
Looking back at missed oppertuitys (hind sight being 20-20) The military would have been good for me. One of my class mates joined every branch of the military starting with the navy. He retired at 39 years old with full pentions and now has a desk in the Pentagon as a concultant! With my mind set at 18 years old, had I tryed something like that, I WOULD STILL BE IN LEVENWORTH TODAY!!!
