HAHA! You got that right. I love traveling all over and hearing peoples assumptions about Denver. Half of the folks on the east coast think I live in the woods and had to walk through 3 feet of snow to get to the airport.

Along those lines, we were trucking across the plains yesterday and my girlfriend (who is a pilot) says, "you don't have a lot of options if an engine fails" (since we were around 2-300 AGL for 45 minutes. I laughed and said, "I have 60 MPH to give up and flat fields in every direction around me."

Reminds me of my buddy who was building time crop dusting. His boss was chewing him out because he was always running between fields low level. He replied, "I've had 3 engine failures already, and I haven't hit the field I was aiming for yet".

You are right, that is exactly how I think of Denver. Why is that?

Your girlfriend might not receive an Oscar for her filming, but I thought all three were pretty darn good. I enjoyed them. Thanks for sharing. The only thing is you must get fantastic fuel burn as slow as your prop is turning--"Just kidding" It would be interesting to know what the fuel burn was on the 180 hp 170 vs that on the 185 since you were both flying the approximate same speed for that trip. Those clouds must have been the precursor to the big snow that is forecast for the Denver area today.

Lot of folks think of Denver being in the mountains, but only if they haven't been there and traveled from Denver to Kansas & beyond over the aired plains.

We were over-fueling the 170 a bit since the engine only has 6 hours on it after this flight. The break in is about done at this point, so we are more comfortable leaning it out a bit. My dad and I have always told folks, it takes the same BTU's to drag these airframes through the air, barring some massive difference in efficiency. We've flown all over the country side by side in 170's, 180's, 185's, all with stock and hopped up engines, and at the same speed , they burn the same amount of gas.

On this trip, we burned 12.0 in the 170 westbound and 11.7 in the 185. On the way back home, 16.9 in the 170 and 16.0 in the 185. Once we lean the 170 out, I anticipate them being nearly identical.

Considering that the SFC on an O-360 Lycoming is aboue .42 or .43, you're jamming a pile of HP out it at 12 GPH.
Were you talking GPH or fuel consumed? Surely you could not have pushed 16.9 GPH through a Lyc. O-360.

Surely he was speaking miles per gallon, bluEldr....otherwise, what difference would westbound versus eastbound make?

That was what was consumed on each leg. We did a bit more wandering on the way home.
