Francis Cahoon sent me a picture of his " '54" model so Frank could see it. I'm posting it here as I found it interesting and bet a few might have some questions about it deserving it's own thread. Francis, I hope you don't mind.

I'll start it off by informing Francis this is not a '54 model. It is a '55 model serial 26631. Anybody else see anything out of the ordinary I didn't notice?

You called it

Tail N Tips

I am near a restaurant and the vertical reminds me of a porterhouse steak.

The picture seems to be of a very nice airplane. A very valuable ride.

Lycoming conversion with CS prop.
Dual puck brakes.
Tow hook.
I'm guessing someone spent money on the panel, too. It has three com antennas and a $1000 balanced loop VOR antenna.

Some years ago I met a fellow names Bob Dentice at a fly in in Porterville, CA, who had a C-170B with a C-175 tail grafted on to it just like the abopve airplane. He claimed it no longer stalled the tail causing the vicious nose down pitch on a maximum slip with the flaps full down.

Now that I go back and look again at the above picture of that airplane, it looks just like the one Dentice had. Same color and paint scheme. Did that maybe be the one that belonged to Bob Dentice? He told me about the helluva time he had getting it approved. He told me that it was finally approved by a retiring FAA friend of his.

Francis/Bruce, thanks for posting the requested photo. This is the first C-175 tail feathers grafted onto another plane of any kind I have seen. Don't know what, if any, differences there might be in the dimensions between 175 & 172 tails. Except for the right hand cowling door I would not have know whether it was a 170, 172 or 175. I have heard that the straight tail has more rudder authority than the nice round tail rudder on 170's/195's/L-19's. Don't know if that is factual or rumor. I also have cautioned against doing a slip with the full 40 deg flap setting with the 172 tail feathers. I do not plan to become a test pilot to see if doing so can stall the horizontal/elevator.

After looking at the photo I saw the cowl bumps for what I thought was the Avcon 180 conversion. I then researched the N number on the FAA database and saw that a O&VO-360 SER engine was used for the conversion. Was the vertical shaft O-360 included in any of the 180HP conversion STC's or was this a field approval? What are the differences between the regular O-360 and the O&VO-360 SER that was used primarily for helicopters? Just curious.

Bob Dentice had more ratings/certificates/modifications and fewer fingers than virtually anyone else I know. Is he still around?

George,
You're sure right about Bob Dentice and his ratings, He had 'em all, kncluding parachute packer or whatever it's called. I haven't seen or heard anything of him in years and used to see him at various fly ins. That sure does look like his old airplane.

Is the bottom of the rudder missing or maybe a tail cone missing? It looks odd.
