Yes, I've seen one other. This pitot is the correct optional heated pitot for the 170. The L heated pitot everyone has is not the correct one and should have some form of approval.

I've installed the mast on my project. Does your friend use the static port built into the pitot tube or the standard one on the left side of the aircraft? Does he use nylon tubing or aluminum tubing to connect to the pitot tube? It would be a lot easier to use nylon than aluminum tubing but I'm not sure how hot the AN fitting which the pitot tubing attaches to gets. Might it be hot enough to be concerned about melting nylon tubing?

I'm sure you're probably aware of this, but just to let others know, the screws that attach the pitot tube to the mast are not 6-32 but 6-40 screws. You can get them through General Aviation Hardware.

Gary, your installing one of these. Well that will make at least 3 that exist. Your really going to make George jealous having an original optional pitot.

The one I saw was on a members plane who showed up at the Branson Convention. Wasn't hard to see members gawking at it over the week wondering what the heck it was. Pretty sure George and I were the only ones there who knew it was the only original 170 heated pitot on the field. The owner didn't even know what he had and had some concern over those staring at it.

Does any one have a 337 example for installing the later 172 heated pitot?

It seems like an easy thing to get approved since the wings are the same.

There are several in our library. Look at 115-1 through 4 and 116. Most reference a kit for the 172.

During the first few years that I had my '52 C-170B, I had a real problem with water getting into the pitot system with the airplane being tied down outside in the rain. Even with the little metal, hinged, pitot cover It somehow managed to get into the system enough that it would migrate to the lowest point back behind the upholstery and then it would plug the line and fail my air speed. This required the removal of the left side upholstery , opeming up the pitot line,and back blowing the line to clear it of water.Big pain in the ass!
After a couple of times going through this routine, i just installed an "L" shaped pitot haed under the wing, a la C-172, less the electric power. Problem solved.
The FAA fellows, and girls, down in OKC were always very busy so I didn't want to bother them with such a simple matter. No one ever questioned me about it.

And no one is likely to question it because it is such a common sight. However the devil is in the details

Suddenly it seems pitot masts are all the rage. You just have to look a little further afield! Take a look at Kari's plane in the Gulf of Bothnia (on the front cover of the latest 170 News) and N2582V, a beautiful ragwing, in Mexico (pg.55 March 2014 issue of Flying magazine.)

I missed the pitot on our cover aircraft but that is probably because that is not the standard length optional heated pitot for the 170. True is is also not the popular L pitot either.
