Hi Folks,

I'm installing a nifty audio panel with a 4 place intercom in my 170B. The aircraft never had rear headset jacks. Any recommendations on where to install these?

I've always thought inside the ash try was a nifty place but personally I've not had a 170 with them actually wired there. Installed but not wired. Had they been wired they might have been a pain as removing the arm rests for maintenance would be difficult..

Mine are installed in the rear door post fairing facing to the rear about 12 to 18" above the floor.

Mine are inside the the ash trays. They work nice but be mindful of clearances when you install them.
If you get the holes wrong, they will ground to the sides of the ashtray.

Also, if you're going to go this route, take the time to make a place inside the ashtray to mount them - vs in the lid. it looks much cleaner IMO when not in use.

The other location is under the hat shelf is you have a hat shelf.

I like the one mentioned of in the door post trim panel. That would also look good so long as they don't contact the cables.

I installed mine inside the rear ashtray receptacles under the lid. An aluminum insert was built for the jacks and pressed into the receptacle. A small hole with a rubber bushing in the back side of the ashtray receptacle allows the wires to exit and go thru an adjacent hole in the side panel with enough extra wire behind the side panel to allow the panels to be removed without difficulty. It is a very clean installation and retains the original look of the interior.

I did not re-install the rear armrests in the restoration, could not see the utility of them in the rear. I also notice some of the ash trays are chrome plated, mine were painted.

Mine were installed in the upholstery next to each passenger in the rear seat. Someone did a very nice job putting these in here. This pic is not great, but gives you the idea.

Installed mine on the rear of the center tunnel just aft of the fuel valve handle.

I installed mine in the forward corners of the hat shelf, but I kind of like Ed's idea of the rear end of the tunnel. I use my ashtrays for storing small spare parts, like screws and nuts.

Mine are installed between the rear seat and interior walls, almost hidden unless you look for them. I'll get a picture of them this weekend.

Mine are installed on angles attached to the hat shelf. Not the easiest to get at once you're belted in, but out of the way and they don't complicate maintenance. Not a good location if you want to remove the hat shelf, though! The wires go under the floor and up along the next bulkhead aft of the aft doorpost on the LH side. The wiring goes to the LH set of jacks, then runs across the shelf to the RH set.

Mine are installed in a small sheet metal box on the fwd top center of the hat shelf. Box is easily removed from hat shelf without messing with the wiring. Easy enough to get to from rear seats.

Mine are installed on the door posts up near the top as to stop people getting tangled up in the cables when entering and leaving the aircraft .

I too put my rear jacks under the hat shelf, all four jacks on the left side. I like that all the cords are out of the way when folks are getting in and out of the aircraft.
