A lovely video just showed up this morning on YouTube featuring member Jeff Tramontano and his gorgeous 170.
Hope this is ok to share, Jeff. You are a wonderful spokesman.

Very nice video. My only comment is that he seemed to be flying in cruise with his feet flat on the floor. Probably a habit developed in the Embraer...

Shoulder harnesses, man. Install shoulder harnesses.

And both hands on the yoke and not touching the throttle on takeoff roll...

I think it a fun video. I have no critiques. Good thing it was a Red airplane. Makes a nice slow flight for the video.

Yes, but... In my Embraer days I was amazed at the people who landed those things in a crab. I was like "Come On, Man!" we're professional pilots right? Flying teaches you so many things about life, and tail wheel flying teaches you so many things about flying.

I'm not particularly widely experienced in jets but the swept-wing jet I've flown slips are prohibited. (737, HS125, all citations even the little straight wings)
(crosswind landings excepted but even then cautions are offered) It overstresses their fuselages in most cases and severe slips adverse-roll affects the opposite wing.

Zombie thread revival! My feet are on the pedals at ALL times (bigger feet?) and my hand was on the throttle for all but that 1.3 seconds at about 15kts…as seen in the rest of the video! And my shoulder harnesses were in the mail hahaha! I think that covers all of it. She’s no longer mine and my kids are pissed because they can’t see over the panel on the 195! But we all miss do miss the 170!

How was transitioning to the 195 from the 170? I spend a bit too much time fantasizing about "upgrading" to a 190/195. I really like being able to see what's in front of me though...

The transition wasn’t bad. I had almost 200hrs in the 170 with the majority being pattern work. I did a day with Jim McLain in Ft worth (thousands of hours of 195 dual given) and was ready to go. Obviously that can vary greatly pilot to pilot. He’s had some students take several days of multiple flights a day. Being super proficient in a 170 is helpful then being responsible with how you set your initial personal limits (cross winds etc) is super important. It’s *a lot* more work to own and operate but that’s just part of the joy of radial ownership. For what it is it is really well supported.

Thanks for the info! Sounds like the flying part would be doable but the actual owning part might be a different story. The ol 170 is pretty easy to take care of.

A while back I was considering a 195. I'd run outside and look up every time I heard a round engine. Most of the time I was disappointed that it was a Harley out on the highway. I talked to many owners of 195s at Oshkosh. They all said that i should not even consider a 195 until I had 100 hours in a 170. Now that I'm well past that point and not too scared of flying a 195, ownership seems way too much work. If I was 20 years younger, then maybe. The ritual of radial engine care and feeding is just too much work for me. Now, it's hard to beat the easy maintenance on a 170. And yet the call of the round engine still makes me run outdoors and look up.

Yep. The 190/195 is a beautiful bird….but has lousy visibility out the windscreen and a hunger for oil, fuel, and mx.
I wanted one also…then realized I don’t need to go 30 mph faster or one more passenger for triple the operating cots. I just had to have the Round TAIL!
