Starter Seal, Did I Install Backwards?

Fellow 170 caretakers,

I just replaced both seals in my pull starter motor (170A). As I look at it now I think I may have installed the one around the pinion gear backwards (brass colored one in the photo). I have the “cup” portion of the seal towards the motor and I’m wondering if I should have done it the other way to keep oil out of the motor. Any help is appreciated. (I’ll probably see my A&P tomorrow, but I’d like to fix it now if it is needed.)

Thanks,
Doug

Both cups should face the engine. You want to keep oil inside the engine.

Yeah, that was my thought. I realized it right after I pressed it in…. Looks like Fresno Air Parts will get another order from me.
