Is it legal to have registration numbers from two countries on one plane?

45.25 requires that aircraft registration numbers be “displayed” and goes on to describe how and where to do it. It does not prohibit displaying anything else including possible registration from another country. To deliberately display conflicting numbers would be considered improper but probably not illegal. An owner might receive a cease and desist request from the FAA.

When I was in the business, I do remember a Boeing 737 that I believe was shared with a US carrier and one from somewhere in Europe displaying both registrations. Someone explained to it went back and forth on a routine basis.

Does the plane in the picture have this issue?

Ok, looked closer and saw N# on tail. I think its legal because it clearly displays a registration number. The larger letters do not obscure or alter what is required. I’m sure there are some who might disagree. 😊

Considered “art-work”…. similar to a banner or sales-msg.
