Failed annual. Mechanic says we need a new elevator bellcrank. Part number 0510108.

Called a couple of places with no luck. I was hoping someone here may have a lead.

Thank you!

Can you be more specific..? What..Exactly… is wrong with yours?

Cracked? Corroded? Split? Bad Bearings?

The reason I’m asking is so that I don’t offer you something that has the same issue as you already own.

Example: Bearings are replaceable… but one example we have has frozen bearings….

The L-19 uses p/n 0660139 for that bellcrank.

It's a bit beefier as they use doublers where the bearings mount. The pivot bearing uses a AN4-11A bolt (0.688" grip) on the C-170B and an AN4H22A bolt (1.813" grip) on the L-19. But if your issue is with the actual arm, I'd bet the dimensions between the various holes are the same between the L-19 bellcrank and the C-170B bellcrank. There's a good chance Air Repair has a NOS L-19 bellcrank in stock. BAS has a used one in stock.

Greatly appreciate the reply. I'm trying to ascertain the exact issue, but I think it may be the wobble which has been discussed on this forum. I shared that link with the mechanic and he's looking into it today.

I didn't know about the L-19 compatibility, so I'll research that today myself.

Again, thank you Gary.

Mechanic pulled it out this morning and it appears as though a new bearing may fix this issue. I'll follow up and close this out once the work is done. I'm learning a bunch already and I don't even have the plane in our hangar yet...

Dan,
Glad to help. To be clear, the bellcrank arm on the L-19 may be compatible but its bearings definitely are not. It seems to me that Cessna was aware of the wobble or play issue of this bellcrank and so beefed up this part on the L-19. (Search "bellcrank play" or "bellcrank wobble" for further discussion on this issue).

Steve Grimsley wrote an excellent article entitled "Rear Elevator Bellcrank Bearing Replacement" on page 10 of the First Quarter 2016 The 170 News. Part numbers for the bearings are not found in the C-170B IPC but they are displayed in the C-170 and the C-170A IPC's. For the top (pushrod) bearing the C-170A IPC calls for p/n AN200KS4. Alternate p/n's for this are Fafnir KS4 and MS27645-4. For the smaller center (pivot) bearing the p/n is NAS296-4A. Alternate p/n's are Torrington AR4-1, Torrington 4NCC910P, and MS24462-4.
