Bendix ScintillaSF6 Mag

Does anyone have a copy of the service manual or know someone who will work on these mags?

Thanks, Bruce!

My old Aeronca had the 4-cyl version of this magneto and shortly after I bought the plane, I re-did the engine… (“re-did” is an obsolete term for “overhaul”…LOL….something one does when ALL the oil leaves the engine due to an over-tightened oil-temperature bulb adaptor-nut……and you don’t notice the zero-oil-pressure until the engine sounds as-if it is running a bit slowly…) :( … I also “re-did” these “Lunch-box” Scintilla mags. They were really obvious and easy to work on, but I found the coils to be dried and cracked…so I “re-varnished” them using “Glyptol” paint which was recommended by my favorite accessory-repair station down in Houston.

They never gave me any trouble at all and were good Ibut heavy) magnetos.

They were Leroy's favorite mag. He probably still have a few in his pile of stuff. About 2005 Leroy needed a coil. Turned out Aircraft Spruce still had lots of parts for this mag including a coil. And the price was like $25. Leroy ordered on and when it arrived it was NOS military stock vaccum sealed in a can in 1948. We all stood around real close as he opened the can in hopes to break in any 1948 oxygen that might have remained un the vacuum. We all had a good laugh. Leroy really hated to open the can preferring to keep it in reserve but if he wanted to fly he had no other choice.

In dealing with my recent mag problem I visited a gentleman in Western Wisconsin who works on mags of any age. I would bet he can work on them. If not he would probably be a wealth of information. He said he has been building aircraft engines and rebuilding mags for over 50 years. It is the shop many Wisconsin A&P's send their mags. Has a cool magneto shop.
