Hello, I am preparing my aircraft for the upcoming flying season and during maintenance I removed the wheel bearings for cleaning and inspection. In doing so I discovered that the bearing retainers were severely damaged and needed to be replaced on both wheels.

However, when I looked in the Cessna aircraft parts catalog (IPC), I noticed that there is no illustration or parts list specific to the type of wheels currently installed on my aircraft. Page 52 of the catalog shows a different type of wheel than the one I am using.

Is there any way to identify the correct wheel and related parts, as well as information on where to order the appropriate replacement bearing retainers. Thanks.

What kind of wheels are they? Cleveland wheels will have a data tag on the wheel. Then you can reference their catalog for parts.

I'd guess 90% of us have Cleveland 40-97A wheels. When you say "bearing retainer" are you referring to the outer race/bearing cup? Cleveland uses p/n 214-00100 bearing cups. This crosses to Timken p/n 13836. It's good practice to replace the inner and outer races at the same time. The bearing cone (inner race) is Cleveland p/n 214-00200 or Timken p/n 13889. George writes about these bearings here. You'll need to join the Association to have access to the Mx Library where that is found.

The DataTag on Wheels is usually and adhesive-backed “sticker” and may not remain on wheels, making it difficult to accurately identify the specific wheel.

The advice offered by “redacted” and Gary (n2582d) is correct if you have the Cleveland/Parker wheel/brake conversions. (the article I wrote/posed in the MX Library to which Gary refers addresses the difference between the outer “race” for the original Goodyear wheels and the different, correct race for the Cleveland wheels. Using the race for the Goodyear wheel which the IPC calls for will be improperly sized when installed in a Cleveland wheel.)
