Is the spinner an absolute requirement on the airplanes. Have any of you run your planes with out a spinner?? G

George will have to answer on the legality. I have seen early 170's that originally had the small skull cap flying without any spinner. I don't know if they were legal or not.

Looks like from reading the Type Certificate Data Sheet that you will need a spinner. It is listed under "required equipment". You will need to correlate the spinner drawing number with the propeller type and/or service to determine what you need.

I notice that almost all the "52 and earlier C-170s now have a "Bullet" spinner, but I've never seen any paperwork in the records authorizing same. It's seldom that you see an early airplane with the original "Skull Cap" spinner on it.
I'm sure it must be one of those "Don't ask--Don' tell" items on so many old airplanes.

The issue is I have the D engine with the 6 bolt crank. I have a nice bullet spinner but when I located the front and rear bulkheads from an old style 172 they were just a little small for the spinner. Since spruce wants big bucks for these bulkheads and spinners and I could live with the skull cap I am inclined to go that way unless like you say the big spinner is a requirement. Then I play russian roulette with spruce hoping their bulkhead fits my spinner and round and roud I go Thnks gentlemen g

The skullcap spinner was original equipment from Cessna. Take a look at any old ads or original owner manuals and it's all you'll see. Mine had the original when I bought it but it was a bit beat up. I switched over to the Bullet spinner which was PMA'd from Univair.

G I guess the problem is going from a eight bolt pattern to a six bolt for the front and aft spinner bulkheads. Does the STC paperwork A/B to a "D" provide any guidance? Otherwise I would guess a 0550228-28 spinner and -3,-26 bulkheads should work. I could look up the prices from cessna for you but I'll let you handle it when your well rested.

STC for install of o-300-d engine 6 bolt crank actually shows vert pointy 150 type spinner. I have talked to cessna and for their spinner and bulkheads we are looking at about $1500 US which translates into about a million canadian dollars. I guess i will have to take the plunge, Thanks g

less than 1/2 that at Univair or Spruce.

I believe the skull cap will not cool as well as a larger spinner.

The original bullet spinner can be fitted with new bulkheads mfr'd for 6-bolt props. Mine was so fitted by spinning new blank bulkheads and punching new holes.

George would you be able to help me locate or manufacture the bulkheads for the 6 bolt crank? It is something i know I could not do my self.Do you think Spruce has the right size undrilled ones that could be drilled? G

I've also got a 0300D in mine and I think I may have a spare set of bulkheads "hangering around". I'll check it out tomorrow. I think I've got a spinner that has a crack between a rear screw hole and the trailing edge. I don't know if it's repairable or not but I know that it went around and around that way for a long time before I found another one

Meanwhile, if you have a local sheet metal shop, they'll likely be able to help you, and then there's the early-model 172 spinners sold by Spruce 877-477-7823 that are very similar. (PN 05-09055 rear plate $181) or the complete spinner PN 05-09045 $310).
