STC for Replacing Generator with Alternator
Posted: Mon Jul 22, 2002 6:37 pm
I'm interested in replacing the 26A generator in my 1952 C170B with an alternator. There are already several posts regarding electrical systems, and two of the three topics have no reply. Here are links to them:

I sent a note to Tom Hall about wanting to upgrade to an alternator, but thought I would open it up for wider discussion. I haven't seen any of the STC's or 337's, so am not sure if bus loads, bladed circuit breakers, and other issues are discussed in them. Here's my note to Tom, any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi, Tom. I just joined TIC170A and am delighted to see a number of STC's are available for 75 cents apiece. I've owned N2449D, a 1952 Cessna 170B, serial numbe 20601, since late January this year. I've been struggling along with a generator that was apparently remanufactured by Aero Electric, part #1101879, serial number A109174. The data plate says it's 12V and 26A. The 337s/STCs available from HQ include the following items that apply to C170B's:
* 20 AMP GEN TO 60 AMP ALT (170B)
* 35 AMP GEN TO 60 AMP ALT (170A-B)
* *50 AMP ALT, JASCO (170-A-B)
* 6 AMP ALT (170-A-B)
My mechanic turned up the following in his STC search:
STC SEARCH
STCNumber SA00202NY
Manufacturer CESSNA
MakeModel 170, 170A, 170B
TCNumber A-799
Description Installation of alternator system on Cessna170, 170A, & 170B with Continental engine C145-2 and O-300-A.
Status Issued 7/15/94
ACO NE-NY
STCHolder
Barnstormers Aviation
911 Sportsman Neck Road
Queenstown MARYLAND 21658
I've tried locating Barnstormers Aviation but haven't had any luck. Can you recommend which STC or 337 I should pursue? Thanks much!
