Hi all- there are 7 or 8 170s in South Africa and mine seems to be the only one fitted with a baggage compartment door- One of the other owners here thinks it was fitted as a field mod- Is this true ? - it looks
like it was factory fitted- The very old copied POHB doesnt mention it

Baggage door is available as an STC, but did not come from the factory (wish it did).

The installation of a baggage door on the C-170 is done on an STC, one of which is available from Harry Dellicker (Delair) in Porterville, California. He advertises in the C-170 Club publications.
The door and the surrounding framework comes from one of the salvage yards, and is taken from a C-172, C-175, C-180, or C-182.
Cost from a salvage yard is usually about $400.00, The STC used to be $200.00.
I use my airplane to carry my camping gear and the baggage door was one of the best modifications I ever made.

It was probably a bootleg mod, and it was by no means the first one! Any reasonably competent sheet metal mechanic can do it.
