NARCO Com 120 Replacment

It's time to upgrade my radio and I've narrowed it down to the NARCO COM 810+R or the TKM MX-11R both of which are direct replacements. The question is which to go with when the TKM is $800 and the NARCO double that? Is the NARCO really that much better?

Ken,
I replaced the Narco 120 in my Cessna 140A with a TKM and had no regrets. Just couldn't justify twice the price for almost the same radio through Narco. Never had a bit of trouble out of the TKM unit.

I had a pair of TKM MX-300s in my panel for 5 years (installed by previous owner about 7 years before i bought it) before the refurb. No problems at all. Decent dependable product from my expereince.

Ken,
I replaced my MX-11 with a Com810+R. I had a problem that the factory could not duplicate or fix. The radio would become garbled and unreadable. I have not had a problem with the Narco units and they seem to have more transmit power. In all fairness, I bought the MX-11 used but sent it back to TKM twice and to Bevan-Rabell once and still had the problem. I now have two narco units and both work great.

My Narco 810 is one of the best radios I've ever owned. Slightly better than the Narco 120's I used to own, and lots better than the Terra junk I used to have in my Aeronca.
I used to be concerned about Narco factory repair service, but not any more. The biggest problems are usually installation and re-use of old installations such as the conversion-type radios. (Except the Narco upgrade/conversions. They are usually pretty good.) New installations are always better, IMHO. Pre-wired installations are OK if you're talented and handy.
