Hello All,
Lee Collins here, newest member and as of this past friday newest 170 owner.
Background: Started flying in my youth back in the very early 80's before becoming a USAF pilot. Currently teaching 2nd LT's how to fly helicopters (which explains my ever increasing gray hair). Aircraft flown: C-150/152, 7AC, C-172, PA 28-151/161, T-41, T-37, T-38, MH-53J/M, UH-1F/H/V, (V-22 sim time)

Airplanes I've owned: This is it! My first airplane and I think I've found the best after spending close to two years looking at all kinds of aircraft. I found a 1952 C-170A here in Tampa Fl (I'm here on Temp duty) and have enjoyed the company of some good local folks and the previous owner who had the aircraft of 20+ years and took very good care of her.

How I found this group: Previous owner wouldn't sell me the aircraft untill I joined; really! Glad I did, I've already learned so much.

I'll keep looking through the posts before the barage of questions, but so far I've enjoyed the discussion on 3 point vs wheel landings!

Look forward to hearing your collective wisdom.

Cheers,
Lee Collins

Welcome Lee. Great another "rotorhead" as George calls us.
I see you list your location as Enterprise Al. If I'm not mistaken that is the home of the famous monument to the Boll Weevil and place I spent my off time will earning my wings at Fort Rucker.

Those aircraft aren't Army aircraft you've flown, are you training out of Mother Rucker?

Most 1952 C-170 aairplanes are C-170B models with the "B" series flaps, et al. If your airplane is really an"A" model, it must be about the last one built. I don't believe I've ever seen one or heard of one before.

The FAA register website isn't yet up to date with registration on that tail number, but they list it as a 1951 170A, serial 20176. WELCOME LEE! Tell us more about your new "baby"!

Hello All,
It was almost the last off the line: SN 20176, 90 short of the end. But I've found it listed both years, I suspect it's really a '51.
Greetings to all fellow "rotoheads", yes I live near the world famous Boll Wevil monument. I'm an USAF Instructor with a small AF squadron located in Ft Rucker (Mother Rucker). Not part of the Army or an Army program, just co-located. The squadron is getting ready to get the TH-1H "Huey Two", glass cockpit huey; I'd never thought I'd see the day!
The previous ower had N1733D for 20+ years and really did a nice job with the aircraft. It was his first aircraft also and he's pretty excited it's mine as well.
The aircraft is "IFR Capable", but not certified. It has very nice wood dash and new interior, the paint is 7-8ish. I've flown it once so far for about 2 hours. I can't belive the vis over the nose, esp with the one piece windscreen.
I'll try and get a pic uploaded when I find out how.

cheers,
Lee

Very nice airplane Lee it is definitely an A model. The baggage door is not original. Wish I had one. The instrument panel overlay is kind of neat as well.

Wow the Huey II, I'm jealous. Did you say what your training in now?
I was thinking an OH-58 (Bell 206).

And what does the USAF need helicopters for? The Air Force won't let the Army have jets, the Army shouldn't let the Air Force have helicopters.

Thanks Bruce,
Right now the AF has UH-1H for training...not uncommon for some to have 15,000 hrs on them.
AF uses helo's for SOF, CSAR, DV support, and missle field support. There's not many of us but we're out there.

We're hosted by the Army but now completly seperate training.

VERY pretty airplane! Lee, that certainly has the prospects of an award at a convention! Hope you intend to make one soon, if not the Kelowna, Canada one this year, the perhaps the Galveston, TX Convention in late June 2007?
