Are there many autopilots available for the 170 line? I note that the century I is available, but S-tec did not appear to be. What are thoughts on buying a used autopilot?
Thanks!

Forget it. Have you forgotten why you have an airplane that is so sweet and fun to fly? You want an airplane that is so sorry to fly it has to have an autopilot? Get an AirBus.

Hey now! The 170 IS an airbus compared to my Super Cub
This is going to be a cross country cruiser!
170's are way too fast for sight seeing...

If you are going for the cross country crusier version, be sure and purchase either an "A" or ragwing, the "faster" versions of the three.

They are all so much faster than the PA18 with tundra tires, climb prop, open windows, etc, that I will probably blow right past the airport...
Airports, hmmm that is another thing I never really needed with the PA18 before either...

Not necessarily true

You can fly in formation with George without trouble. At his speed he has proven that in the middle of a dark night over the woods of East Texas he is slow enough to drop in to a small clearing just by using the headlights of a car 5 miles away

Autopilot for 170's

Brittan makes an auto pilot for 170's that is a wing leveler coupled to the DG. Its nice when you are IFR or VFR and need to look at a map or check on the kids in the back seat. It's easy to put in and all you need is an A&P mechanic to sign it off, as it's STC'd. As my aircraft has been damaged in a ground loop, I will be selling the auto pilot complete with turn/bank and DG for $1,500 (Over $4,000 new 6 years ago) Tom ----

Even an item that is "STC'd" will require an A&P-IA to submit a Form 337. But at least it's an approved alteration.
