Engine model and serial number

If an engine is listed as a C145-2 with serial numer ####-D-8-2 can I tell what model it is A/B/C or D?

Yes it is a C145-2. which is similar to an O-300A.

The A/B/C/D designations are applicable to the O-300 series, not the C-145s. A C-145-2 is... a C-145-2. It is essentially the same engine as the O-300-A which is also listed on the type certificate.

The "D" in the serial number is an indication that the engine has a "dampened" crankshaft. It has nothing to do with the engine model. Your engine model is that which is listed on the datatag as a C-145-2.
