are you sure john isn't a mechanic in that sceen. had a couple of pilots threw my shop this week i felt like doing that too.

That reminds me of a flight instructor I knew at a local glider club. One day he got into a heated exchange with a student pilot after a flight and sucker-punched his student! Needless to say he didn't instruct at the club again.

Yes, it's the High-and-Mighty scene... but it's a pretty old movie, not a new release. (And typical of JW braggadocio.)

A future blemish on the 170's excellent safety record, and they will all be saying what a great pilot he was,"I saw him make that airplane do things that were supposed to be impossible".

1954, to be exact. And a favorite of the airline community. Sure it's an airborne soap opera, but it was the first. And the technical aspects are spot on, courtesy of the late, great Ernie Gann, who wrote the novel AND the screenplay.

I have to disagree with George on John Wayne's performance in this one.
He plays a washed-up co-pilot who lost his family in a crash that he was commanding...first officer with a small Trans-Pacific airline is the only work he can get. The slapping of Robert Stack, whose decision to ditch is questionable at best, is the only moment in the film when Wayne is just John Wayne.

Its his most nuanced performance. At the end, when everyone just shakes their head at the dangling number one engine. Wayne walks away into the fog, whistling the famous theme...Russ Farris

P.S. I agree with George on most of John Wayne's movies. "The Green Beret" to me is unwatchable...

I watched the movie for the first time last year, then bought it, then I read the book. If I am not mistaken, that slap scene is actually in the book... it just happened to fit JW's persona.

Geo, I think you are right... I don't remember Earny Gann making that part of the book reek of so much tough guy testosterone, it was more of a slap to get the Captains attention. I think I will make it a part of my post Christmas watching experience. I actually got it, and "Island In The Sky" last year for Christmas. I just watched "IITS" a couple of days ago, interestingly it has a similar scene where JW says he'll shoot the first guy that tries to wander off. I really think that the big guy just couldn't help himself!
