The International Cessna^® 170 Association

I see in the Flypaper that the club may purchase a copy of the Cessna drawing for the heated pitot which would allow someone installing a heated pitot to skip the 337 process. I though maybe someone in the club may already have a copy of this drawing in their records that they could provide to the club saving the $150 cessna wants.

Probably best to get it from cessna then you know you have the most up to date one. Even though I won't be suprized if it has a 1960 date on it. I would like to get one.

I would like to have one also, it implied that we should let the club know we were interested, and that they could copy it.

Before buying the Cessna drawing we should find out whether Cessna sells and restricts the drawing for a single user, like a software license or an STC. I'm not sure of the legalities...

The way some Feds are behaving nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd require a 337 to be filled out based on the definition that you've altered the pitot system, which could affect the airspeed indicator if done improperly. Field approval wouldn't be necessary because you're using factory data; just indicate in the work accomplished that the heated pitot tube was installed in accordance with Cessna drawing xxxxxxx. 'Course others wouldn't think twice about it.

BTW, Cessna stamps their drawings saying they are intended for single-aircraft use along with the serial number of the aircraft and an expiration date of the print

STC drawings are single aircraft use. The association already has the heated pitot drawings, available @ $15. See the list at "The Mx Library" section.

I purchase the Cessna Heated Pitot Drawing from the Association.
It calls for a Kollsman 518B-01 pitot head and Cessna part numbers for the mast, lineand bracket. Also miscellaneous small hardware, switch etc.
Where can one buy a Kollsman pitot head ? The drawing only shows the pitot head in a top view but it does not look like the regular pitot tube we're used to seeing on modern Cessnas.
Maybe the STC route would be better?

Maybe the 337 route would be better? There's no approved STC for the 170 but there is a kit for the 172 (AK172-72D) and I have a copy of a 337 and a letter from Cessna stating that they see no problem in installing this kit on a 170.
Might this be a better route after all?

I just spoke with Yingling Aircraft's parts guy- he said the Cessna Kit has been discontinued ! Doesn't see any other kit that superseeds it-

Rudy, a friend of mine "drives" a 1960 C172. He bought a heated pitot kit through Wag Aero. It is aproved for 180's but not 170's or early 172's. If you put it next to any Cessna, it looks identical. He got it installed by hsi AME.
I also got a plan from the association and what one "could" do is to get it installed, as per the drawing and log book would read: Heated pitot installed as per Cessna drawing number 0500062 My biggest concern would be that it is installed properly, not what part number is stamped on it. I haven't run into any feds that determined to give us a rough time; not saying they donn't exist, just that as long as what is done is safe and makes flying my 170B more enjoyable... JD

I haven't rec'd my copy yet to confirm, but I believe the Heated Pitot dwg that's being discussed is a "shark-fin" type of pitot such as that used on military aircraft, Stinsons, etc., usually mounted on a long tubular probe.

George, you're right- the drawing shows the pitot tube sticking out of the wing leading edge. But might it still be approved for the A / B models- ?
You'd just have to drill a hole in the wing...
