Alton Bay, New Hampshire B18

This is supposedly the only ice runway approved by the FAA in the 48 states. It opened up 3 Feb. Anyone interested on landing on a ice runway on Lake Winnepesaukee in central New Hampshire? It was not open last year because of weather and 'management'. New management this year and Glenn is doing a great job. The identifier is B18 and is located at the southeast corner of the lake in Alton Bay. I am trying to find out if the restaurants on the lake are open yet for business. There will probably be some sort of flyin in a few weeks that is always interesting. http://www.aanh.org/2005alton.html
AANH (Avaition Assoc of New Hampshire) has not updated their web site for this year but they may soon to indicate when their flyin to Alton Bay will take place.

A couple of years ago I flew in with my wife. When we departed on rwy 1 towards the lake I leveled off over the lake and a few minutes later noticed out of the corner of my eye a snowmobile keeping up with me. I was indicating about 90 knots with very little wind. Next to the landing strip was also a snowmobile drag strip. The races are fun to watch as a lot of them are definitely not 'stock'.

Yup. Been a regular thing in Feb. for as along as I can remember (weather/ice permitting).

Weather permitting, we'll be going up there Sunday. The ice on the lake at my house is only 4" right now, but we're looking at a week long temp. of about 20 deg. Maybe by Saturday I can practice my "slip & slide" in front of the house!

I'm sure the guys from AK, MI, MN will have much better stories to tell. We've landed at Alton over thirty times. The only time I ever had trouble was once on glass smooth ice, no snow, and blustery winds. The plane did two complete loops before I had the sense to power up and get rudder control. Although this is my first year with skis, I can tell you it's a blast.

Today was my first time at Alton Bay, and my first on ice. Amazingly beautiful and it was a festive day -- all sorts of people with their planes and snow mobiles.

But I will never go without a shovel again. No disaster, just underestimated a tiny looking snow drift that swallowed up my big-girl tires in a hurry. Pushed out without much trouble, but it could have easily been more embarrassing.

Drat, Alton Bay is closed. I wanted to fly up today, Saturday. But the snow storm and wind meant they were unable to keep the runway open. If the cold weather continues, maybe they can open again.
