Turn over rate

Post by Watkinsnv »

It appears to me that the turn over rate of our precious 170’s has been going up lately. Now I know that the economy has a lot to do with it. Also the age/medical condition of our members. What with the constant raise in value and cost to maintain our 170’s. In the last 30 years my plane has been sold 6 times. In 75 in ID, 76 - ID, 82 - ID, 88 - NV, 89 - NV. and 99 - Nv. when I bought it. A previous owner has tracked it down and ask to buy it. Thanks but no. It would be interesting to see the statistics of how many times our planes have changed hands and what states they have resided in over the years. Lance

I'm the third owner of '98C. The first owner took delivery in December of 1954, flew it a couple of hundred hours (including a trip to Havana, Cuba back when you could do that sort of thing), then sold it sometme around 1957 to the guy I bought it from in 1982. I'm responsible for 1500+ of the 2700+ hours total time.

The first owner was at Graham Air Base in Florida. The second owner was in Georgia. I've owned it (or is that "her"?) in Tennessee, Mississippi, and California.

PS: Everything I have is for sale, you just have to make the right offer.

I'm the fourth owner of mine, as far as we know. (Who knows if an ownership change occured while it was in El Salvador? Then purchased by an A&P and imported, then by the restorer, who sold it to me. If they could only talk.) :P

I read a woman's comment that said: "Owning an airplane is like marrying a man with a temperamental, teenaged daughter. You're happy at the wedding but you really don't know their history and she seems to have it in for you."

I'll go though my logs and include the numbers later... but it does remind me of a problem I had soon after buying our 170.

I was looking for some old pictures and info from previous owners. I had a name of an owner in Seattle WA. I did a google search and found a phone number. Called the number and asked the lady if her husband was there. No, he was deceased. I asked if they had owned an airplane at which point she got defensive stating they could never afford an airplane.

After me telling her what I was looking for and why, we hung up.

A few days later I get a call from the FSDO office asking me lots of questions. Evidently the lady had called the FAA and thought I had a stolen airplane and was trying to register it in her husband's name! The paperwork hadn't yet gone through OKC for the purchase so it took a few days for the FSDO office to track everything down and call me back. I thought they'd say sorry, but all they could tell me was to "Not bother other people!"

Needless to say, it did have me concerned for a day or so. Guess the lady was elderly and with all the 9/11 stuff was simply scared. Didn't stop me from contacting some of the other owners though.

#11 in your list, William Wehner, aka Bill Wehner, is one of two co-founders of the 170 Association, and is member #2. If you want to contact him, look in the directory under New Mexico. He'd probably be happy to hear his old airplane in still in the Association.

I have two C170Bs, but I have no idea how many owners they've had.
However, I think they're both about ready for another. I may be posting in the Trademart sometime soon. Now, if I could just stop crying!

When we bought our '52 in 1972 we were the fourth owners. The first owner was Lawrence Flying Service in Lawrence Kansas. The log books showed that Delbert Earhart was the AP/AI that serviced the plane there for about 5 years. (He was kin to the Amelia Earhart's family of Atchison Kansas.)

In 1957 N2693D moved to Atchison under the ownership of Sam McBride. It was there it suffered the indignity of having the hanger roof collapse under a extra heavy snow load damaging the gear box and breaking down the right wing outboard of the strut. Repaired and coated with a clear vinyl over the polished skin kept her looking good for several years.

In 1971 Keith Mowrey, (Doug is he any relation?) bought his dream airplane and based it at Faucett, MO. He was in the Crop dusting business and as many of them do, had a crash. Tore up his plane (a 1970 Cessna AG Truck). He found out that the Cessna Dealer had been taking his insurance premiums and pocketing them so his insurance was nil. Unlucky for him - - Lucky for us. He had to put his 170B up for sale to be able to fix his AG Truck.

When we bought '93D it had 1450 hours total time AC / Engine. It is now on it's 4th engine and about 6000 hours showing on the tach - - She has been through all kinds of flying. Hauling Sky Divers (I have jumped out of her 5 times! Yeah on purpose and the "D" was piloted by Dave Clouser, the one of only two pilots who have been given the privlege of flying our Delta D without one of us in the right seat). She has hauled halves of beef a couple of times. A whole hog, (butchered and wrapped  ) to Ivy Bend Airport on Lake of the Ozarks ( funny story attached). Boring hours of Pine Beetle Patrol, Air Search and Rescue, and numerous aerial photography flights. She has crossed over the Continental Divide about eight times, took us to Oskosh 6 years in a row (from 1974 to 1979) and a couple of times since. Several times to Central Baja Mexico where we had a camp. Once to Kenora Ontario. And she spent six years (this was while we were living in Saudi Arabia) in the care of Tom OcConell and Don Richcreek at Montezuma Airpark (the only time she sat outside in her life and she got hail damage!). We flew her home to Atchison January of 1987 without a cabin heater! Tom had put the late model muffler with the 3" outlets on but hadn't connected the cabin heater! Wasn't too much of a deal in Arizona but that was one bitter cold trip when we got into Kansas!

In 1988 we bought this little Log House where we now live. From February 1989 till I retired November 1991, we spent all our vacation time here on Toledo Bend. Usually once a month or more often, we flew from K59 to 5F9 (now 5LS9) . We actually used '93D for a moving van! Many trips (sans rear seat! ) were made with the cabin loaded to the roof with stuff!

It has been a wonderful trip! Thanks Delta D for the 35 great years and more to come (I hope).

Hey, Iowa! Looking over your airplane's ownership history.... I noticed that a David Ahrens once owned her up in Iowa. You might check it out ans see if he's related to another guy we all know around here named Dr. David Ahrens....from Iowa.
