Yep what these guys do is amazing.

We used to fly helicopters low level (200 ft) hoping from one hanger roof (a checkpoint) to another crossing behind landing traffic and such to get to the GAT at Kennedy. I'll never forget one time a controller asked me to go to a 200 ft hover in front of the tower facing it till he could cross me behind traffic.

As busy as they are they where the Kennedy controllers were always the easiest to work with and Newark was a close second. La Guardia was the worst of the NYC area airport controllers.

Yes it did. He actually didn't say hover he said orbit and the restriction was about the size of half a football field between the runways in front of the tower for those that have been there.8O I pretty much kept it moving a little but it was more a hover than forward flight.

I felt like waving to the controllers watching me do this to see if I could get a reaction. And believe it or not I had to remind the controller I was waiting there. :o

One of those little moments that you just sort can't believe happened that you don't forget.
