Hello all, I am a new member and a fairly new 170B owner. I was wondering if any of you boys or lady's know where a bent, or bowed in gear leg can be fixed. Wentworths can get me a used one for $695 but I am still looking to save a few more $. Thanks for any advece and Help.

He frequently has gear legs for sale. Which gearlegs do you have?

And the gear leg is bent and there is no other damage to the plane. Hmmmm, wonder how that's possible.

That's what's happened to mine. I have a 337 from when '98C was only about 2 years old that shows repair/replacement of landing gear bulkhead, belly skin, floor panels, lower cowl, etc. No mention of work done on either gear leg, yet when you stand directly in front of the airplane, a slight difference in the curvature of the two legs can be seen.

I bent the leg last week when I looped her. Got the wing too, there are three wrinkles between the tip and the second rib.

Ouch sorry to hear that. I sure hope you didn't but I can't imagine bending the gear and not damaging the gear box.

Bruce Many years ago when my 55-B was new to me and I didn't know about the possible park brake problems I totally destroyed a lady leg, wheel, tire and wing tip, without any other damage. so it is possible with a little luck. I think at the time it was hot day as it did a considerable amount of damage to the runway surface that they had to repair.I have long ago removed the park brake and rod clips. That situation is not that uncommen with that type of park brake, as I was told by Transport Canada, after the fact. A close inspection of the gear box, and all is in perfect shape. Hard to believe that it handled that kind of side load and the amazing thing too is that I was at max weight. That I think is what saved the engine.

Wow I just wouldn't think looking at the gear leg verses the gear box structure that it would be possible to bent on and not the other.

Bad anything happened, good the gear box is OK.

I'm curious, does the gearbox have theP-Ponk modification or is it stock.

I once stood a 170 on skis up on its left gear while trying to make a turn. The wing tip didn't hit the ground. The NAS Axel bolts all bent and two of the nuts poped off. The axle still held. I took a good look at the gearbox and changed the AN bolt that holds the gear leg in. I learned a lesson that day. The cost could have been much higher! :?

I think it is very possible to bend a gear leg without other damage, if you have the p-ponk mod. I've seen those gear boxes take quite a beating with no damage. Including the one on my plane
