FAA Warns Operators of Unapproved Parts Business
The FAA last week issued an Unapproved Parts Notification for George Myles and his company, Miles Aviation of Pompano Beach, Fla., nearly a month after a U.S. District Court sentenced Myles to a 76-month prison term. He was convicted of falsifying documents about parts he sold to various customers, both civilian and military. According to information from the court, 95 percent of the company’s customers were civilian parts suppliers, to which Myles sold everything from landing gears to basic nuts and bolts. The FAA’s unapproved parts notice said Myles Aviation was not certified to inspect, repair or overhaul parts, and that the company sold used and overhauled parts while claiming they were new or new surplus parts. Unfortunately for operators, tracking which parts originally came from Myles might be difficult because the company sold to third-party suppliers, according to the DOT’s Inspector General’s Office, which helped prosecute the case. In the notification, the FAA said if operators identify parts from Myles Aviation “appropriate action should be taken.”
