A Father's Day TR... Oregon flying

Post by 1SeventyZ »

After about a year and a half of putting a lot of sweat and knuckle skin into ol' Charley, my dad and I finally got the chance to take a fun flight, and on Father's Day no less. This is copied from my website, but I figured since a 170 is involved you guys would enjoy it too.

Thanks to this forum, I solved a vibration issue by re-indexing the prop on the crankshaft...it smoothed right out at 11 & 5 to TDC at 6.

We flew a fun 205 mile round trip from Grants Pass, Oregon to Powers, over Cape Blanco, Gold Beach, then up the Rogue River canyon back to Grants Pass. The stop at Powers was simply awesome...I don't know a more beautiful place.

Anyway, here's the pics:

Yes, I am a pilot. Can't you see the twinkle in my eye?

Hmmm...

The town of Powers...you can see the airport as the mowed strip in the distance. It's not really backcountry...more "sidecountry" as we call it in skiing when you step just out of bounds, but not very far:

The strip is in fine form...the grass was a little long, but very thin, light, and wispy:

Obligatory me+plane+location shot. I know I'm a poser but I'm trying to break the cycle.

Where's Heidi? It was like the Sound of Music over there.

I don't know if there are fish in there, but I'm going to find out next time.

My good old dad... He loves to fly in and camp out here.

Cape Blanco, it's the westernmost point in the continental US:

The wind was whipping up white caps on the ocean. We were cruising down the coast at about 1,500 MSL but I climbed up when I realized the beach wasn't looking too appetizing for landing.

It was our maiden voyage together in the 170 that we've put so much work into the last couple years, and a great day with a guy I don't get to spend much time with doing the things we dream about. It made for a really great Father's Day.

FATHERS DAY TRIP

Post by 170C »

I can't think of a better way to celebrate Fathers Day :!: One you will always remember and so will your DAD :) Good photos too. You need to send the one with your plane and the flowers to Doug. He might put it in the 2008 calendar. Your plane looks great too :!:

Actually, Zane and I swapped emails on that very topic shortly after he posted the pics and he sent me a few candidates for the 2008 calendar (thanks Zane!). Unfortunately, the one with the flowers (a great shot and the one I was planning on using in the calendar) is unusable. Zane's digital camera has been having "problems" of sorts and on that photo it left some horizontal discolorations across the image (across the sky and across the cowl  ) that aren't really visible until you view it full size. It's a great shot, but not something I can print in the calendar.
