Gentlemen,

Doing some research on my 48 - 170 and have some questions on the prop ID numbers. I have a McCualey Kliptip MET-L-PROP S#67183 and a DM # 7655. This prop has been on and off this plane so many times it should have zippers. It evidently has to have a dye penetrate test every 200 hrs. What does the 7655 (DM number ) represent? In the log book the number has changed a couple of times but I think it was only a misprint.I checked the McCauly site but hit a stone wall. Thanks

The 76 refers to the length of the prop and the 55 to the pitch. If the 55 changed to or from a lower number the previous owner probably had the prop repitched. Go to this thread for an explanation of the rest of your questions. http://www.cessna170.org/phpBB2/viewtop ... sc&start=0

Why does your prop need to be dye-penetrant inspected every 200 hours?

Thanks for the quick response and all the info. I now beleive this prop has been repitched and returned to the orginal pitch. It shows a 53 in the log several years ago and a 51. Some one was looking for better performance.

The dye test is to comply with AD 82-27-01

This AD does not apply to Cessna 170 aircraft and the McCauley 1A170/DM and MDM propellers installed on them. The "FFA" prop is not approved for the C170, unless you have one installed under some other basis of approval.

I believe that McCauley fixed pitch metal propellers are limited to a total of ten (10) cumulated inches of pitch chance.

This conversation is getting very interesting. My prop has DM7655 along with the above information stamped on it. The prop and engine logs only go back to 1976 but it looks like this prop was on it then. Would the FFA prop have that series of letters stamped on it? If this prop does not require this test then several people have been making some money off the previous owners of this bird. Time to call in my A&P.

I suspect you have found your answer!

Your prop, if marked as you say, and if the proper length (not less than 74.5"), is a 1A170/DM7655 and is not subject to any AD. (And it is pitched 55 inches, a cruise prop.)

The prop is stamped with the letters and numbers posted above. I just measured the length and got 75.25" (and very cold hands). So I am guessing this prop meets all the critera to be EXEMPT from the AD. Where can I find documentation to confirm this and learn more about the McCauley props? It acts like a cruise prop as I got 7.25 gal/hr bringing her back from Fla. On cool mornings I can get a pretty good climb rate but when the 3 H's move into the DelMarVa area it goes to pot.

It's not that the prop is EXEMPT... It's just that the AD does NOT APPLY to the prop you have. Previous owners have been shafted due to ignorance. (They should have been members and participated in these forums.)

McCauley is the mfr, and they sell the service manuals. They are not cheap.

I have the manuals and will be giving copies of all prop specs out at this years 40TH ANNUAL CONVENTION in BRANSON, MO.

My A & P was out flying yesterday and dropped in to our airport (MD1). I asked him about this issue and he agrees that the AD does not apply to this prop. He also thinks people were getting ripped off. This situation has more than paid for my membership in this Association. Thanks again to everyone who had a comment.
