The International Cessna^® 170 Association

I am in the process of obtaining a 337 for these little guys on a ragwing. I have been in contact with my buddy at the FAA. What I need is some info on the A model wing . I do not have any A models close to my home town and the ceiling is 6'' or less ,can't fly to one so I need help. Can someone take some measurements for the width and length, of the flaps,ailerons, and overall width of the wing,say at the attaching points. is the A model wing straight across the leading edge? The reason for this is that there is an STC for the A model but no ragwing. The airfoil NACA # 2412 is the same for the A model and ragwing and the Cessna 140 according to the Cessna tec rep ( also a 170 owner named Josh) nice guy too. Back to my FAA buddy,we"ll call him John , that is his name, I new that the 140 and the ragwing wing were nearly the same and according to the cessna tec rep they do use some of the same ribs but John was concerned about the weight differance between the 140/170. After talking with the tec rep Iam thinking the A model is a better bet. There are two vortex generator co. and neither one did the pour little ragwing, just wasn't enough made they said. If I can show the FAA the two planes the A model and the ragwing are the same or close,,,, maybe I to can be vor-ta-sized////// not only will I have an attitude (180 gear legs) but I'll be s l o w ,,,, Won't that be Cool? If you're going to buy a set of VGs for a Cessna wing, you better ask for a money back guarantee if they don't make any improvement. The ones I've seen tried on a C-170B did "Zilch" for about $1450. They did provide slightly better elevator control at touchdown on landing.

Russ,from your location I'm guessing that you're talking about installing BLR VG's,sold by Cub Crafters there in Yakima?
I have a friend at my airport that just bought an A model,I'll see if I can get the measurements for you. What measurement s do you need? Please elaborate.
You are aware that the A wing is tapered-chord,just like the B model? I think that the A & B wings are the same except for the flaps (and the dihedral).

I have flown several airplanes that had VG's. My feeling is that they do something for the airplane, but it is small. The people that really brag about VG's come from two different camps. 1) They have to brag because they cost 1450 dollars. 2) The VG's gave them the confidence to slow down to a pace that the 170 could already fly at.

Since they don't do that much, you should only use the location that was specified for that airfoil (140). The weight difference does not change the critical angle of attack for that airfoil. Any other placement will be wrong and the performance could be reduced. VG's can hurt the airflow as well.

No matter what, you will look COOL!! And sometimes that is all that matters!!!

On my 180 I had VG's and I looked cool, now I own a 170B and that is cool enough!!! Kelly

This airplane will already fly so slow you can land it in places too short to ever fly it back out of, no matter which engine you have.
If VG's are installed, the airplane becomes legally unairworthy if only a few of them are knocked/fall off.
They cost a fortune-per-mile-per-hour and make the airplane look ugly and hard to wash without damaging them.

Spruce Aircraft now sells the Micro VG's for a bit cheaper, $1350. Still alot of money! I think I'll wait to try them out on somebody elses plane before I splurge.

I have experianced southern hospitality (ie) the awful waffel house on the trip I made to Cartesvile Georgia to purchase my ragwing and fly her home.The first problem I had after I got to the rockies was my little 170 started shaking ,never been that high in her whole life. It has been a battle to teach her to fly above 1500'msl.....One of the reasons for the vgs is in hopes that the control surfaces will respond better and yes have a saftey margine at slow speed. I do live on a lake ,how well do those gaters like the cold and snow? got some neighbors that might work out just fine as dinner,if you know mean. Russ
