This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helo rescue mission.
The pilot is a PA National Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life

Yes I know the pilot personally as he at one time was my immediate supervisor at work.

So, does that make him a taildragger helicopter pilot? :P

Well yes it does George. The CH-47 lands with the tail wheels first as you see it in the picture. The Blackhawk and it's variants do as well but they don't have a back door.

I don't mean to take anything away from this pilot, his abilities, his creativeness and drive to get the mission done or his service but the maneuver might not be as difficult as it appears to be.

To tell the truth I've seen this picture many times and though I used to talked to him everyday for nearly a year I never thought to ask him about it. Maybe I'll remember to do that when I bump into him next time.

BTW anyone ever see the You Tube video of a CH-47 picking up a Seal Team and it's boat.

Wow! I was impressed with Bruce's Petit Jean landing - till now!

Anytime I see these guys at work, I feel good about paying my taxes. Thanks to every one of them!

Yep, without any intention of making this political, I just wish the powers-that-be would pay them what they're worth, support their families while they're away, and give them sincerely-good medical and benefits when they come home. Unfortunately, it's just not the case.
